GMS Weekly News and Notes
Weekly Recap
On another note, I want to commend all of our students for their outstanding level of cooperation with the "away all day" rule for cell phones. In visiting classes this week, I saw students engaging energetically with one another and with their teachers without the distraction of incoming messages and push notifications. At lunch time, our students have been enjoying conversations with each other and with our staff which has strengthened our sense of community steadily since the first day of school. We're very grateful to have the partnership of our families in maintaining the policy!

GMS Staff: Two Truths and a Lie
From the School Nurse:
We are planning our annual screenings to begin September 19th and continue until completed.
All grades will be having postural screenings. The purpose of this screening is to find early signs of possible spinal problems in students. This is not a diagnostic service, but is a program to identify young people who may need further medical evaluation. Female students are asked to wear a 2-piece bathing suit or halter-like sports top under their clothing to school the day of the screening. The male students will remove their shirts for screening. This permits more accurate observation of the back. All screenings are done individually in the privacy of the nurse's office or in the locker rooms.
All 7th grade students will be having hearing, vision and height/weight screenings.
If your child has any unusual findings, we will send home a referral form for them to follow up with their physician or specialist. If nothing unusual is found during the screening, you will not be contacted. However, if you are interested in the results of the screening, please call the Health Office.
These are state mandated screenings, but you may opt your child out of the screening by contacting the health office in writing or via email at darcyk@cantonma.org. Please make sure to follow up with your pediatrician so that they can complete the screening at their office. If you have any questions, please contact the health office at 781-821-5070, Ext. 3186
Transportation Update
I am pleased to report that our buses were close to 100% on time with both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up this week. We will continue to work with district leadership and First Student in order to address any lingering issues.
Parents or guardians who have questions regarding route assignments should contact Brett McCloud at mcloudb@cantonma.org.

Help Wanted: GMS School Council
One of my goals as principal is to engage GMS families in the important work of shaping school policies and programming in order to ensure we are meeting the needs of all members of the GMS community. Our first school council meeting will take place on Monday, October 3rd in the GMS library (exact time TBD). The council will meet in the evening on the first Monday of each month. The first order of business this year will be to review the School Improvement Plan, which will contain all of our major institutional goals for the year ahead. All meetings are open to the public, but we are in need of voting members from among our parent and guardian community.
GMS CAPT Corner
Canton Association of Parents and Teachers (CAPT) is the non-profit parent/teacher organization at GMS. Our families help to provide and enriched educational experience for our students by supplementing their daily curriculum with in-school programs, curricular and extra-curricular field trips, and cultural celebration activities. All of this is accomplished through small annual membership dues, active family fundraising efforts, and our team of dedicated volunteers. CAPT needs YOU to volunteer, so please join our first meeting if you can.
September Update:
Fit-4-Fund$ is our only CAPT Fundraiser of the year, if we meet our goal!
Who: All students in all grades participate and teachers run activities.
What: Wellness-based fundraiser where students choose one activity (walk, bike, volleyball, roller-blade, skateboard, basketball, flag football, etc.)

Students can also raise funds through bake sales, yard sales, and change jars. All donations greatly appreciated. Please help us reach our goal!
