End of School Year 2018-2019
Important information for Berrien Springs Virtual Academy
Important Scheduling Information
Good evening Virtual Academy families~
Tonight we held a meeting intended to inform and aid families with selecting courses for next school year. We would like to keep you up to date with changes happening at the state level and how this new legislation affects our students. Michigan legislators have determined that all students K-12 must have a more intentional Career and Technical Education focus.
In K-5, students will develop an “awareness” of the careers around them. To accomplish this, we will ask that all students K-5 independently learn about three jobs and present to our Elementary mentor on what they have learned. This will not only build their awareness of careers but will also address an ELA standard of oral presentations.
In 6th-8th grade, students will gain “Exposure” to career pathways. All students will complete a one-semester course called “Career Explorations” - students will select 6 (out of a given 13) career pathways and learn specifics such as education required, job growth rates, daily life, and pay scale for those types of careers. This course may be taken in high school if students missed it during middle school and wish to take it.
In 9-12th grade, all Berrien Springs graduates must complete one semester of personal finance and one semester of career planning and development. This new graduation requirement may also be taken as a seated class at the high school during 12th grade only.
Please use the enclosed packet from the high school for seated course options.

Please see https://www.berrienspringspartnership.com/ to check out our partnership electives.
Finally, please be advised, students may not be overscheduled. The limit for total classes is K-5th grade = 6 total courses, 6-8th = 7 total courses, and 9=12th = 8 total courses.
Course selections in writing are due back by Friday, May 17 especially if you want a seated course at another building.
