Braver. Smarter. Stronger.
Happy Mother's Day!
Dragon Families,
Happy Mother's Day to all our Dragon moms out there who selflessly pour themselves into their children each and every day. Thank you for staying up late at night during fevers, for preparing meals, doing laundry, working outside the home and for helping with homework and online learning. Today is your day, and we at Carroll ISD hope all of you are being celebrated and honored.
For some of you, it's been years since you could see your mother or maybe you lost your mother recently or grew up without a role-model mom. We hope that your heart is filled with happy memories and warm thoughts of times spent with your mom or that you had someone special in your life to step in and fill your mother's role. Grief, loss and hurt can hit you at the most unexpected times, but today, we are sending you a virtual hug if you are missing your mom or wishing you had a better relationship with your mother.
It is a special day for many, so take some time to honor and remember the one who tucked you in at night, cared for all your needs and loved you unconditionally. And if that wasn't your experience, reach out to someone who is doing that for their kids and probably hasn't been thanked enough. Together, we are raising the next generation of moms and dads. So hug those littles tightly and thank a mom this Mother's Day.
Big Week Ahead!
You may not realize it, but Carroll ISD has a big week ahead. We have been working on a Modified Graduation Plan that involves a safe celebration at Dragon Stadium on May 29. This was always our first option, and we are hopeful that our seniors will graduate under the lights on their home field. Still, the event will have to meet the restrictions set forth to safely prevent the spread of COVID-19. Our goal was to write a plan that complies with Governor Greg Abbott's Executive Order. The plan has been reviewed by our school attorney who believes it complies with the legal requirements and restrictions of the state's COVID-19 reopen plan. On Monday, Carroll ISD will sit down with local officials to review aspects of the plan for possible implementation. We look forward to sharing it with the community soon.
Meanwhile, our CISD Administration is also working on our own local "phase-in" re-entry and re-open plan. This will involve the safe reopening of CISD facilities including outdoor tennis courts, central office, the aquatics center and more. We are currently closed through June 15, but we are working on a re-entry plan that takes into consideration all the safeguards and restrictions of COVID-19. We ask for your patience as we work through our plan to phase-in facility openings. We know you are anxious to get your athletes and students back to workouts and normal routines; we are too. But, because we also want to do everything we can to keep our students and staff safe, our plan must be well thought out and intentional. Stay tuned to more information on these plans in the coming days and weeks.
The principals and parents at each of our campuses have been planning special end-of-year events to celebrate our seniors, our kindergarten graduates, our fourth/sixth grade students and our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. These events will continue to practice physical distancing restrictions by remaining six feet apart, wearing face masks and using gloves if items are to be handed out. Students are still not allowed in CISD facilities under the Governor's current order. You should hear directly from your Principal or PTO about the plans that affect your child or campus. On Friday there were several student groups and parent volunteers who planned parades throughout the community. We've seen some very creative events, posters and videos popping up on social media this week. A special thanks to Mayor Laura Hill and the City of Southlake for hanging light pole banners in Southlake Town Square honoring our Class of 2020 by name. What a wonderful way to recognize our senior class. We'd like to give a big Dragon shout out to all those who are working to make the best of a difficult and challenging situation. And there's still more to come.
At Carroll Sr. High School, the staff is planning a drive-thru event Wednesday so that members of the Class of 2020 can drop off their laptops and pick up their graduation caps and gowns. We will be watching the weather closely because it does look like we are in for some rainy May weather later in the week. We don't think even the forecast can dampen the spirits of our Dragon community. Let's join together to continue to show our students who we are #DragonStrong.
Week 8 Lessons Posted Online
We posted the Week 8 Lesson Plans for Grades PK-4 on our Teacher-Based Instruction page Friday afternoon. There are a lot of rumors floating around (mostly hopeful thinking by students) that we will be ending online learning this week. This isn't the case. While the lessons and assignments may start to look differently the final weeks of the year, CISD must ensure continuity of services until the final day of the school calendar. These last couple of weeks should give us time to go over key concepts in the curriculum. Please help us by keeping your students engaged and encouraging them to reach out to their teachers for support and assistance. Remember, you can still go back to the link and scroll down to find Week 1-7 Lesson Plans. The assignments and lessons for Grades 5-12 will be released in Canvas on Monday morning. Monday is an "B" day for grades 9-12.
School Board Calls Special Meeting Via Teleconference May 11
The Carroll School Board has called a special meeting via teleconference on Monday, May 11. The only thing on the agenda is a project to address the chiller system at Durham Intermediate School. The chiller was installed as part of the 2006 Bond program but went out unexpectedly in the 14th year of its life cycle. School officials had hoped to replace the system in the next bond program. The replacement project and equipment could take 10-12 weeks. Until then the DIS campus will be without air conditioning. The Board called a special meeting to address this project so that it can be ready in time for the start of school in August. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. The agenda is available online by clicking here.
Trustees to Be Sworn In This Week
Carroll ISD will welcome Eric Lannen to the School Board on Tuesday when he is sworn in at the CISD Administration Building. Eric ran unopposed for the three-year term in Place 2, currently held by Trustee Bradley Taylor. Because of COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions, the swearing in will not be open to the public, CISD will videotape the event and release it on social media. On Thursday of this week, Trustees Sheri Mills and Michelle Moore will be sworn in for another three-year term. Both Mills and Moore ran unopposed for the Place 3 and Place 1 seats, respectively. The first teleconference meeting with the new Board will be Monday, May 18. To see Carroll ISD's tribute to outgoing Trustee Bradley Taylor, click here.

Don't Forget to Register for Summer School!
Carroll ISD's 2020 Summer School sessions will be offered online this year. Summer school sessions begin June 2. Qualifying students may participate in Summer Programs for Grades 3-6. Pre-registration is available through the student’s campus, Assistant Principal’s office or Summer School Coordinator, Daniel Dodson at RES. Students must be recommended by the campus Student Assistance Team (SAT) per the district’s promotion and retention policy. Secondary students interested in Accelerated Courses or Credit Recovery Courses may begin registering online this week. To learn more about CISD's Summer School program, visit our Summer School FAQ on our COVID-19 webpage.
What About Next Year?
Finally, you may have heard some shocking rumors or discussion about the 2020-2021 school calendar. Last week Commissioner Mike Morath suggested during one of his conference calls with school superintendents that each district consider revisiting their school calendars. He suggested communities might want to determine an earlier start date, longer breaks throughout the fall/winter in case of a COVID-19 resurgence and intersessions built in for helping students with learning gaps. Please know that no decisions have been made by Carroll ISD to alter next year's school calendar. However, we are studying possibilities and will reach out for staff and parent input on potential calendar options. Stay tuned to our official CISD communications for more information on how Commissioner Morath's suggestions could impact next year's instructional calendar.
Have a great week, Dragons!
Stay safe & be well,

Frontline COVID-19 Dragon Heroes
Josh Landry - Class of 2006
We are celebrating members of our Dragon family who are on the front lines of fighting COVID-19. Pictured here is Josh Landry, a firefighter and paramedic in Irving. Landry is a member of the Dragon Class of 2006 and is the son of retired Durham Intermediate School teacher Cindy Landry.
Thank you, Josh, for being #DragonStrong
