5th Grade Family News

Dear 5th Grade Family,

This week was really rolling with academics. We began a book study in language arts, began math stations and took our first assessment, and started science fair this week. Students are really acclimating to their schedules. They are on-point, organized, and ready for action! Please be sure to be checking Wednesday folders and taking a look at agendas. Each teacher works hard to make sure students' agendas are up to date with assignments, assessments, and reminders. We are working on building your child up for middle school. Go Cougars!

Special Note From Ms. Coffey

I just wanted to let you know that I will returning to KCC after a couple of days of being out. I had some health problems that took me away from work on Friday by ambulance. I spent a few days in the hospital and was able to go home last night. I am home resting today and I plan on being back tomorrow. Please know that I am okay and that I miss my students terribly. Special thank you to my team Miss Anderson and Mrs. Pennington as they have taken over 5th grade with expertise. Thank you for the texts and well wishes. I can't wait to return tomorrow. Have a great day. Apologies for any delay of communication while I was out. If you have any concerns, you can email me at hcoffey@kidscc.org. Thank you.

DONATIONS REQUESTED

NOTE FROM MS. PENNINGTON: Science Olympics

We will start our Science Olympics in two weeks; this is a great learning opportunity for the students. They will create a marble coaster, and learn about forces in motion. This takes a lot of masking tape and cups. Donations are greatly appreciated; we need 1 inch masking tape and 8 or 12 oz. paper cups (these can be found in the party section at Walmart). Thank you in advance for any donations.

Miss Anderson's Language Arts Class

The Grammar Goddess has arrived! This special character will continue to make appearances in our Language Arts classes during GUM time (Grammar Usage, and Mechanics). We wrapped up our second spelling unit this week, and students rocked it out! “Our Song” will conclude next week, while Bud, Not Buddy is just beginning. Next week, we will be back on schedule with our spelling with words going home on Monday and a spelling test on Friday. As always, please make sure your student is reading 20 minutes every day!

Ms. Coffey's Math Class

Thank you for your patience with iXL. We were working on getting it reinstated. It should be up and working in the next few days if it is not working by now. This week we took our first assessment. Students practiced problem solving techniques including circling number words, boxing math action words, and asking themselves if their answers make sense. By taking their time, students can ensure they are slowing down and practicing math question the best they can. Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Pennington's Science and Social Studies Class

Science/Social Studies – In science we are still on The Forms of Energy and will cover heat, electrical, chemical, and mechanical energy this week. We will also work on static electricity and learn about conductors and insulators. In Social Studies, we will continue learning about Native American migrations and how the environment shaped their lifestyles. Students will create their own Winter Counts. STEM Fair – this week the students are working on purpose and research; it will be due at the end of the week.
