The Second Grade Scoop
May 19th, 2017
Dear 2R Families,
Review, review and more review! We have been preparing for some end-of-the-year assessments in 2R, which means that we have put a pause on our Math and Writing units in order to review. The students have come such a long way since the beginning of the school year. It has been exciting for them to realize that concepts they thought were tricky in the beginning of the school year are rather easy for them now.
We also enjoyed our two field trips last week (pictures below) and the start of our ABC Countdown. Thank you for your support as we count down the last 26 days. They love celebrating!

Reminders:
5/26: Half Day for Students
5/27: Scholastic Book Orders Due (if interested)
5/29: School Closed/ Memorial Day
5/16: Last Day of School
Math
Like I mentioned above, we have been reviewing all week in Math. A lot of the concepts have become pretty simple for the students because even concepts from September are revisited nearly every day in their workbook pages.
Next Tuesday we will begin the end-of-the-year assessment. This assessment will be broken up into several days. You may notice less Math homework next week because of this.
At home, please continue to...
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts. If they have mastered those, start practicing multiplication!
- Continue to encourage students to explain their thinking aloud or on paper.
- Talk about fractions or "equal shares" you see in daily life. We know all about halves, thirds and fourths at this point.
- Include your child in any measuring or estimating done in everyday life.
- Check out Number Grid Difference, Shape Capture and Basketball Addition games on the Everyday Math website. Please email me if you need your student's login.
Reader's Workshop
At home, please continue to...
- Encourage your child to read for at least 15 minutes each night.
- Encourage your child to read aloud to you from time to time. They can read a book aloud to you or even just the dinner recipe.
- Ask your child questions about what they have read.
Writer's Workshop
Social Studies
Last week, we took our field trip to Greenfield Hall to learn about Haddonfield's history. The students learned about John Gill, the man who used to live in Greenfield Hall. We learned that the Gill family didn't like to waste a thing so they used the hairs of their horse to stuff a couch and they used their own human hair to create artwork. They also learned that the Declaration of Independence was scribed by a man who used to live in Haddonfield!

Order Due Date - Saturday, May 27th
Thank you to everyone who participated in the April purchase. Because of your orders, we earned 8 free books for our classroom. The order should be in by Thursday, May 11th. I will send home the May catalogue on Monday.
Please take a few moments to explore the April selection next week together and let your child help choose books he or she is excited to read. For a wide selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub.
If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $8 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!
