MARINER MEMO
03/07/2022 - 03/11/2022
PRINCIPAL'S NOTE
We wrapped up most of our winter sports this week. Spring sports have started and we have a great showing. So many student-athletes are showing up and being part of our teams. It is so fun to see! We encourage all students to find sports, clubs, and activities to connect with.
On Tuesday, I had the honor of dropping off the baskets the Sehome PTSA put together to show our appreciation for our Bellingham Police Department and District Office staff that support our Sehome community. They both were huge sources of support during our December incidents, but also throughout the school year. It truly takes our whole community working together to support our kids. I really appreciate the work of our PTSA and the energy they bring to put these things together. If you have not done so already, I highly recommend joining the PTSA to support their ongoing work.
March 13, 2022 marks two years since we shut down schools! When we announced that we were planning to shut down for 6 weeks, I really had no idea that we would have to work so hard to bring kids back to the building over a year later! I am thankful that we have been able to open this whole school year! We are really hoping that we can do our first full school year in our new building.
Monday, March 14, students, staff, and visitors will have the option of whether or not they want to wear a mask. The mandate to wear a mask will be lifted and we will transition to having masks optional. We will continue to have masks available for anyone who wants one. We ask that everyone be kind and respect the decisions other people are making. We do not know what goes into each person making their decision. I am excited to see some full faces next week! The smiles and laughter are balm for my soul.
We look forward to having our incoming 9th grade students and families at Sehome on Tuesday, March 15 at 6:30 PM. It will be fun to have everyone on campus and to show off all of the incredible programs and space we have to offer.
I hope that you enjoyed the sunshine of the weekend. Please reach out with any questions, concerns, or feedback. I love hearing from you!
Let's make it a great week!
Sonia Cole

4 - MASKING UPDATE
As Dr. Baker shared Monday, Washington State’s mask mandate will lift March 12. The science and the data show that things are getting better, and we are hopeful moving forward in this next stage of the pandemic. Masks have been an important tool during the pandemic and will continue to be an option for us to wear when we choose. With this change ahead, some may be feeling excited or anxious and some may have questions. Each person will be able to make their own decision about what is best for them given their circumstances. We ask that everyone is kind and respectful of others’ choices.
5 - INCOMING 9TH GRADE FAMILY NIGHT
We would like to invite you to our Incoming 9th Grade Family Night. Family Night will be on Tuesday, March 15th at 6:30 PM. Bellingham, Sehome, and Squalicum High Schools will each be hosting their in-person family night. Each school will be open to welcome incoming 9th-grade families in their service area. The goal of this event is to become familiar with academic and activity offerings at the high school. We look forward to welcoming the families and students of the class of 2026!
Current students will be there to welcome our incoming 9th-grade students and families. Sehome teachers, counselors, and the administrative team will be there to welcome families and answer any questions about classes and activities offered at Sehome. Our Mariner Market will be open selling Sehome merchandise. Current Sehome students will be highlighting some of the programs available throughout the tour of the building.
The open house and tour will wrap up at 7:10 with a formal program in the main gym.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
7 - TRAFFIC SAFETY THROUGH SHS
Do you have a 15-year-old or soon-to-be 15-year old that is interested in driving
and getting their license?
They can take Traffic Safety Education (TSE) through the school. Classes will start September 2022 and February 2023. The only requirements are that (1) your student is 15 before the first day of class and (2) to add TSE to course registration happening now.
Not in the class yet and still want to get a permit? Students as young as 15 can take the knowledge test. Successfully passing the knowledge test will allow them to obtain a permit.
To get a license, they will still need to complete TSE or wait until they are 18 years old.
The knowledge test is offered for free. To sign up, use this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/stateknowledgetesting
If you have other questions, you can refer to the Department of Licensing for steps to obtaining a driver’s license. https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/steps.html
Sehome High School PTSA would love for you to join the crew!
So, why should YOU become a member? Membership and dues support your student(s) by:
- Funding educational and curriculum needs
- Advocating for students and teachers at the local, state, and national levels
- Building an inclusive school community for all families
Increasing PTSA membership, even by one, make it possible to provide educational resources, speak up on important issues, and create a stronger school community.

15 - EMERGENCY AND WEATHER PROCEDURES
Emergency and Weather Procedures
It’s that time of year to think about snow and our procedures and impact of weather-related school cancellations.
Depending on conditions (which could include snow, flooding, power outages, etc.), school could:
- close for the day (in the case of widespread power outages),
- open two hours late with regular bus routes or snow bus routes,
- open on time with snow bus routes.
How can I get weather/emergency information?
Changes to the school schedule are usually announced by 6 a.m., and we use a variety of methods to keep families informed:
- Sign up for alerts: To receive email, phone, and/or text alerts, set your communication preferences on the Skylert tab within Skyward Family Access. (Need help? go here for step-by-step directions or contact 360-676-6520.)
- Tune to local media: 790 AM, 96.5 FM, 104.1 FM or Seattle media.
- Check bellinghamschools.org
- Check @BhamSD on Twitter, @bellinghamschools on Facebook and @bellinghamschools on Instagram
- Call 360-676-6400 for a recorded message.
- Call 360-647-6815 for a message translated in Español, русский, tính từ and Punjabi.
Please familiarize yourself with our weather procedures at bellinghamschools.org/weather.

16 - MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
When a student requires medication at school, either prescription or over the counter (OTC), parents/guardians must return a completed medication authorization form with directions from a licensed health care provider (LHCP) to Sehome. One exception is that certain OTC medications that are self-administered do not require LHCP instructions, but they do require a parent/guardian to complete the medication authorization form. There is no situation that a student taking medications at school does not need a medication authorization on file.
The privilege of students self-caring their medications, whether prescription or OTC, requires students to take their medication as instructed on the authorization and being aware that they may not share their medications with anyone. Medications brought to school must be in the original prescription container or manufacturers labelled OTC container. Medication authorizations expire at the end of the current school year, or sooner as per LHCP instructions.
Link to Medication Authorization Form can be found here
