Reminders!
Record that Reading!
EACH night the students should be recording their reading time on the October calendar page in their agendas. They know where this page is and should be able to record it themselves. An adult just needs to initial it each night :).
- Please send a snack with your child each day. Please do not send any drinks other than water- juices are sticky when they spill! Thank you! (remember that we are peanut and treenut free)
- Please check and sign your child's planner every night.
Math Updates
In Math this week, we spent two days problem solving. The first day we spent mathematical representations to solve division problems. The students were asked to draw pictures, use numbers, and explain their work in words. The second day was spent going over representations and possible solutions as a whole class. Students were then given the chance to revise their work and align it with the models that were discussed in class.
For the rest of the week, students solved division problems that involved remainders. They played a game called division arrays. They also took a look at even and odd number patterns and discussed how they related to division.
Next week, the math review is due Tuesday 10/19. This information will be used to do small group review on Wednesday. Finally, they will take the Unit 2 test next Thursday and Friday.
Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we continued to read our beloved book, Stone Fox. While reading, we used the text to help us tackle what to do when we come across figurative language, or nonliteral language. We talked about strategies that we can use when the words don't seem to make sense- and then students were asked to use their grit and get to work!
We also used the text to teach us how to stop and ask questions when the text signals us to do so. When we do this, we let our questions lead us to reread parts of the text, which makes us think new things and leads us to possible explanations for a surprising part.
The students then practiced these skills in guided reading as well as in their independent reading books.
Word Study
Regular Word Study this week! :)
This is the schedule:
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This should be completed in the word study notebook in their binder.
The notebook will then be returned to school Friday morning and handed in to me :).
Friday- there will be a test given
This means that before the notebooks are handed in on Fridays there will be...
1. an answer key made of the sort and discovery in class during sort introductions
2. Monday night homework practiced/written sort and discovery.
3. a blind sort and written discovery on Thursday night.
Writing Long & Strong
This week in Writing, we learned how to punctuate dialogue correctly. Students were given a guide on how to do this and asked to check the areas in their stories that contained talking. Ultimately, we want the students to have quotation marks around the words that are being spoken. We do also ask that they use commas or punctuation within those sentences and while this can get tricky, they did a really nice job with it!
Special Areas
Gym- In Gym, the kids are working on cooperation and leadership skills while preparing for physical fitness testing.
Art- In Art, the students are continuing to study the American Artist Elizabeth Murray and working on creating a collage painting based on the her work. They painted objects which will be cut out and glued together.
Music- In Music, students will be reading and performing quarter note, paired eighth note, quarter rest and half note rhythms. They will be practicing these rhythms on non-pitched percussion instruments. Also, they will learn a pentatonic song and accompany it with Orff instruments.
Library- In Library, the students are doing partner research while practicing the use of the dewey decimal system

Technology
This week we posted our High Frequency Sight Word Sentences to SEESAW!
We dove Into the world of Google Classroom this week. All students learned their email and password to log in- and we learned how to navigate together! As we become more familiar with it, I will use it to assign work in class each week.
We learned how to use Book Creator to create their own books. The kids can use this to publish their narrative writing pieces after writing them next week. We also started a grammar book where we collected nouns that we found in our reading.
Simple Machines
In Science this week, we continued to work simple machines.
We started the week learning more about levers. We came to the conclusion that the tradeoff with levers is that the effort needs to take place over a greater distance for the amount of force needed to decrease. For instance, when you put the fulcrum close to the load, it is much easier to lift. However, the other end of your lever is very high and will need to travel a greater distance to do the work.
We then started investigating friction. We discussed that friction is the resistance that an object meets when it moves over another object. We created friction by rubbing our hands together quickly. We could even hear the friction when we did this! We then added a soap and water mixture to our hands and learned that if you add lubrication to the two surfaces, it will reduce the friction and make things move more easily.
