Facility Construction Update

In the Fall of 2012, a committee was formed to assess the facility needs throughout the district. The committee consisted of the Board, administrators, teachers, parents, community members, and students. Together, they created a comprehensive list of needs and from the prioritization of that list, determined the top 10 most needed facility updates or additions. Since that time, the Board has diligently worked through items on that list to best meet the needs of our students and our community.

Multi-Purpose Facility

On December 19, the Board of Trustees selected Ratcliff Construction as the general contractor for the GHS renovations and construction and approved the value engineering at a Special meeting on January 2. On January 12, the project officially broke ground and the construction of the new building officially began. The entire plan includes construction of a new 50,000 sf facility and the renovation of the current 11,000 sf field house. The two will be joined to become one large structure serving the needs of all of our GISD students. The new construction consists of a weight room which will better meet the needs of our boys and girls athletic student population, additional offices, and a better functioning training room. The other portion of the new construction will be the complete multi-purpose facility, which will be 60 yards long and have the ability to serve many purposes. All students will benefit greatly from having this large indoor facility, keeping them out of the elements in rain, extreme cold, and extreme hot. Early morning winter workouts for the girls soccer team will be much more bearable in the climate-controlled facility. The band will have an additional space in which to practice, rather than the gravel parking lot. The cheerleaders, dance team, off season athletes, PE students, and the general student population will utilize the facility throughout the entire year. This facility is not only a benefit to students at GHS, but the entire community through youth sports and community-wide events. The entire construction project is scheduled to be competed in September 2017.

Lee Band Hall

GISD sees the importance of growing our overall Fine Arts program, which includes better facilities for our Lee band students! In December, the construction began for a new building which will replace the current portable. The new structure is located on the north end of the campus directly behind the main classrooms. The hall will be completed this summer, in time for our 2017-2018 students to begin the year. This is an investment in our GISD students for years to come!

GHS Course Fair

The fourth annual GHS Course Fair was held on Thursday, January 26. The course fair gives students the opportunity to explore the numerous electives and dual credit courses available at GHS. GISD is proud to currently offer 26 dual credit courses to our high school students.

Students currently in 8th through 11th grade came to the event to help them determine electives of interest for next year prior to scheduling classes for the 2017-2018 school year. Current 6th graders at Lee Intermediate also visited the fair throughout the day as a way to develop interest in programs available in their future years at GHS.

In addition to the numerous electives and dual credit classes, GHS is proud to meet the needs of our students and are able to offer 25 endorsements in five areas including STEM, Business & Industry, Public Services, Arts & Humanities, and Multi-Disciplinary.
