The Hall Way...

Thank you to all of our families that came in for Parent Teacher Conferences last week. The staff loves collaborating with our families to help and support our students. Hopefully you picked up your student's folder that had their MAP and IAR scores along with some other information. The videos and links below contain helpful information for parents about how to understand the scores and your student's progress. If you were not able to attend conferences, the contents of the folders will be sent home soon. The end of first quarter was today. Report cards will be mailed home the week of October 28th. Hope our Northwood families have a nice long weekend!

Maybe he doesn’t seem enthusiastic to learn new things. Maybe he’s not doing his homework. Maybe her grades are dropping. Maybe a fight occurs whenever you try to sit her down to do work. There are many potential reasons that a child might be turned off by school. This article provides steps you can take to investigate what might be happening: Does Your Child Lack Motivation? What it could mean when kids just don't seem to be trying very hard in school

6th Grade News

Sixth grade science students are practicing their questioning skills. While creating questions to guide their learning for Astronomy, they are compiling questions to ask a real, live scientist. Students in Ms. Thomas' classes are "Skyping a Scientist" this month. First and second period will be talking with Michael Rivera, an archaeologist and anthropologist. Third period will be talking with Gina Palefsk, a biological anthropologist. Sixth period will be speaking with Jessica Fry, she works with cancer cell migration and will give students a tour of the tissue culture space. Finally, ninth period will speak with Shelby Ziegler, a marine biologist, that works in preserving coastal habitats, such as sea-grasses, wetlands, and oyster reefs.

7th grade info!

The 7th grade quarter reward field trip permission slip was sent home this week. We will be walking to the Woodstock movie theater on Friday, October 25th to see The Addams Family. The permission slip and $7 are due by Tuesday, October 22nd. Students must bring a bag lunch and are allowed to bring money to purchase snacks from concessions. We will be stopping at Olson Park on the way back to Northwood. Students cannot attend if they failed any of their classes, have 3 or more team-level detentions, or more than a half hour administrative detention.

Reminder: For Veterans Day this year, we are collecting items for the Woodstock National Guard to be sent over to local men and women serving in Afghanistan. We are collecting items such as new playing cards, ankle socks, fruit snacks, trail mix, snack size Pringles, drink mixes (i.e. Crystal Light packets), body wipes, and travel size hygiene items. We are also accepting cash or change donations to help cover the shipping costs.

Per the NMS handbook:

Should the student be seriously ill, the nurse, or designee, will contact the family. Students are not allowed to use a cell phone or to call their parents from a classroom to tell them to pick them up from school.
