Our Learning
The workshops for Reading, Writing and Math are being established. The district wide workshop model includes whole group mini lessons, small guided groups and application time for practice. The kids are doing a great job getting in these routines.
Literacy:
Our first unit in reading will focus on community, integrating social studies and literacy. We are in the process of learning about various communities around the world and what impacts them! "What impacts a community?" is the question we will be returning to throughout the unit. This will support writing in which we will investigate more about a topic we are familiar with and write an informational text.
Fifth Grade Math
The classes are finishing up on the first section of Unit 1 which focused on place value with decimals to the thousandths and the following number forms.
- Standard form - 413.674
- Written form - four hundred thirteen and six hundred seventy-four thousandths
- Expanded form - 400 + 10 + 3 + 0.6 + 0.07 + 0.004
- Expanded notation - (4 x 100) + (1 x 10) + (3 x 1) + (6 x 0.1) + (7 x 0.01) + (4 x 0.001)
The students were given a study guide today which covers these learning concepts with Thursday, Sept. 24 being our assessment date.
The SDW Parent Math Site has been updated. This is a very comprehensive Kgn. through fifth grade site, so be sure to take a few minutes to view it.
