Star Assessments: Winter Testing
Earlier this year, the district began implementing Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). MTSS is the process of using research-based assessments and practices to support student learning and needs.
With this process, CB uses the Star Assessment by Renaissance to collect reading and math data of students. The initial assessment was taken in the fall by all grade levels. For the winter window (late Jan. to early Feb.), a second assessment will provide us with information about our curriculum, as well as, student growth within specific skill interventions and enrichments. These assessments will be completed electronically in your child’s classroom across one class period in both reading and math.
The information from the MTSS process has been beneficial in identifying early learning needs of CB students.

School Happenings
MLK Day of Recognition
Students across the school have been learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the role he played in advancing civil rights in peaceful ways.
- In 2nd grade, students have been learning about MLK, Jr's legacy with a research/writing project;
- 3rd Graders in Mrs. Szczypiorski's class learned how Dr. King was a hero who showed leadership through peaceful protests. Dr. King fought with his words to encourage equality for all, regardless of the color of your skin or cultural background.
- 3rd Graders in Mrs. Gilluly's class listened to and discussed the wise words of Dr. King in the book Martin's Big Words. They drew self-portraits and wrote their own "big words" around their drawings. Their "big words" described the character traits that each of them have. The class talked about ways to honor Dr. King's life - and the examples he set - with the kind deeds performed each and every day.
- 5th Graders in Mrs. Halpin's class studied the vision of MLK, Jr. and created "My Big Words" posters of themselves and MLK, and finding character traits that describe both.
- 6th Grade - Students discussed their own dreams and ways they can make those come true to inspire others.

Ms. Augustine, Butler's QUEST Teacher and Staff Development Coach, is hard at work seeing our original vision through and planning the training of our Butler staff and students on how to utilize the space. The themes of DREAM - CREATE - IMPROVE are highlighted encouraging students to foster their problem solving and 21st Century skills to make positive change!
