St Teresa's School Newsletter
Friday 10th February 2023
Kia ora, talofa, kamusta, choum reap sor, cześć, hallo, malo e lelei, namasthe and hello!
Thank you for the warm welcome I have received at St Teresa's. It has been wonderful to meet so many of you. What a special school we have, filled with the coolest kids around!
It has been a busy start to the Term! I know you will join me in extending thanks to our dedicated teaching team and support staff. They have been working hard to make the transition back to school feel happy and safe for students. Here are a few highlights from the first 2 weeks;
Our senior students proudly lead our Pōwhiri as the school and Board welcomed Cat, Mila and I to St Teresa's.
On Saturday we assembled a crew to hold a parking fundraiser at the Martinborough Fair. A huge thanks to Mrs Lark, Renee & Korban, Becs & James, Scott & Jamie, Tanja and Valentina! It was such a hot day but spirits were high and together we raised a whopping $1032 for the school camp!
On Tuesday we gathered together as a whole school and parish for a school Mass at Anzac Hall. The student's singing was so beautiful and got a few of the parishioner's toes tapping!
Our Meet the Teacher Picnic was a big success. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. Our amazing senior students raised another $156 for school camp with a (funky!!) sausage sizzle. Thanks to Super Value, Premier Bacon and Featherston Sports Hub for supporting.
I will continue to update the community calendar as events arise. I would like to draw your attention to the Teacher Union Meeting on Friday 3rd March. The school will be closed from 1 pm. More information is detailed below.

Wings Over Wairarapa
Time 4 Tamariki Wāwāhi Tahā
Teachers love what they do but lack of funding means that they don’t have the support they need to make sure every child has access to quality education. The Primary Teacher's union NZEI, has launched the Wāwāhi Tahā campaign which calls on the Ministry of Education to implement changes and to take bold action to ensure that all children have the education they deserve.
These are the things teachers have identified as important;
- increasing classroom release time
- more professional learning and development
- increasing support for children with higher needs
- reducing the teacher-student ratio in our classes
Our teachers will attend a Paid Union Meeting (PUM) on Friday 3rd March 2023 to vote on the latest offer from the government. These meetings will be critical in determining the next steps that affect us all. We ask for your support by collecting your child at 1 pm lunchtime.
On Valentines Day staff will wear Red to support this campaign. Together we can build a better system for our tamariki.

Connecting in Faith
Baptism Programme
The sacrament of Baptism marks the beginning of our life of faith. In Baptism, we are welcomed into God’s family and begin the journey of getting to know and understand the meaning of God’s love. If you would like your child to take part in the Baptism programme this year or would like more information please reach out to Lindsey or Amber.
Sacramental Preparation Programme
This programme covers a study of First Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Holy Communion for children aged between 7 and 16 years old who have been baptised in the Catholic Church. If you would like your child to take part in any of the sacrements this year or would like more information please reach out to Lindsey or Amber.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
Reconciliation is the healing and reconciling action of the Holy Spirit. Through this sacrament, we are renewed and recommitted to being open to the action of the Spirit in our lives in helping us to share God's love with others.
Sacrament of Confirmation
Confirmation is a continuance of what has begun at our baptism; a continuance of the developing awareness and reality of faith and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Our confirmation is the gentle unfolding of what our baptism means.
Sacrament of First Holy Communion
Eucharist means Thanksgiving. The eating of the bread and wine, which are changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to be the food of eternal life, is the sign of our union with Christ.

Please reach out if we can shine a light on your tamariki's out-of-school achievements. Email Lindsey at principal@teresas.school.nz with sports wins, musical performances, dance exams, swimming medals etc. Let's tell the world how amazing St Teresa's students are!
Here are this week's superstars...
Ka Rawe Neo & Zaan
Neo and Zaan represented Featherston Athletics at the 2023 North Island Colgate Games in Whanganui. The boys gave an outstanding performance and have been celebrated online and in the Featherston Phoenix.
Neo came first in the 60m, 100m and 200m sprints; first in the long jump; and second in the discus. Zaan achieved personal bests in the 200m and 400m races.
What an amazing achievement, we are blessed to have such great role models at St Teresa's!
Mīharo Ezra
Ezra gave an impressive performance at the Paraparaumu Athletics Ribbon Day. Check out his amazing results;
- Sprints 3rd
- Discus 2nd (pb)
- Relay 3rd
- High Jump 2nd (pb 1m20)
Ezra also wanted to give a big shout-out to his dad, who got third place in the mature gentleman's race. Mahi Pai Karl!
Tino Pai Jamie
On the first day of school, Jamie noticed that there was a lot of rubbish lying around our school. He decided to do something about it, collecting a large container’s worth and more!
Ka pai tō mahi, Jamie!

NEXT MEETING FRIDAY 24th FEB 6pm
Pack the Bus 2022
We want you to know that in 2022, more than 900 families in our region received presents and Christmas cheer through Pack the Bus, a third more than the previous Christmas. The bus was filled up four times and it wouldn’t have been possible without all the time and effort made by all of you.
Our pick-up points are vital to this project. So in our district, we want to thank Featherston
Supervalue, P&K Martinborough and Greytown FreshChoice who have always supported us.
We also want to say a very big thank you to the schools that make such a major contribution; Featherston School, St Teresa’s, Kahutara School, Greytown School, Blue School, Martinborough School and Kuranui College. Thanks to the teachers, parents and students for their generosity and who always make sure the pick-up is a smooth process.
A huge thanks to Craggy Range vineyard in Martinborough, which every year donates hundreds of gifts and mobilises its vineyard workers to help get these gifts onboard. Major kudos to all the businesses and members of the public who donated at the public park-ups.
And thank you to our elected members and staff who showed up on the day to help with the
collection and packing!
As the bus reached its destination, Masterton, the gifts were warehoused and distributed to various agencies. This was coordinated by the awesome Linda Voice of Emerge Aotearoa, who worked with roughly 30 different community agencies to ensure all donations stayed local.
Let’s do it again this year so that the many families and individuals who need it are able to receive a bit of Christmas love.
