Finding the Moment
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was standing over the shrimp dip when a family friend approached me. Although he was known to ask thought-provoking questions, and this was my going away party, I was not expecting this one. “So once you get settled in your new home, what do you imagine that moment will look like when you feel like everything is going to turn out okay?” he asked.
In one mere sentence my friend went straight to my greatest fears, my greatest insecurities, and my greatest hopes.

Whew. Have you ever read something that spoke DIRECTLY to you? This author/blogger is one of those people who gets it-she gets life and I was so grateful to read this blog post this past weekend. She may have written it a number of years ago, but it was exactly what I needed. Change is hard, ya'll. And isn't it true that change is really the only thing we can count on to stay the same?
I find myself, like the author, dividing my days into these same two categories: "The moment." and "Nope, not the moment." Some days seem to be filled with "not the moments," and those are the hard days, the discouraging days. They are the days that I feel I have let people down. And it's palpable. But then there are the days where I get a glimpse of "the moment," and I think everything is going to be alright. Life is like that. We keep moving forward and we keep looking for that moment. What will your moment look like? And if you know what it will look like, what are you doing to get there? And maybe even more importantly, what are you doing to dig in and help others glimpse their moment?

Terrific Tiger Shout Outs
Please remember these are available to add an additional layer of "positive." The long stretch from late January to March always seems like a time when the natives get a bit restless. The days are short, the weather is cold-or, in our case-RAINY, and everyone is just a bit edgier than usual. When you have one, send it up to me. I will call the parents, write a little card to the kiddo, and we will announce their name on morning announcements.

Paperless Pointer: Inference Equation
What it is...
This is a great strategy to get your kiddos inferring and thinking at a deeper level. It can be tweaked in several different ways, but start out with a basic equation. Provide students with a non-fiction text of some sort. Ask them to read a brief section of it-this will of course depend on age, familiarity with the topic, individual student needs, etc. After reading the section, they come up with an "equation." For example, consider the following text:
Let's practice with a paragraph...
Eris was discovered in 2005. It is about the same size as Pluto. And like Pluto, it is part of the Kuiper Belt, a ring of objects that circle the outer edge of the solar system.
After Eris was discovered, scientists had to make a decision. Either Eris was the 10th planet in the solar system or it was not a planet at all! And if Eris weren’t a planet, could Pluto be considered one?
Scientists made new rules for what is counted as a planet, and decided that neither Pluto nor Eris qualified.
Information Equation based on the passage:
It's a simple strategy that can be recorded directly on the passage. Recording them on sentence strips makes a great display/bulletin board of authentic work. Kiddos from Kindergarten on up can do this in their own way, even if it is a picture and dictation for each portion of the equation. You can also do it in a whole group with a read aloud and turn and talk. This strategy automatically lifts the learning and deepens student thinking! If you give it a try-let me know how it went!
