Reader's Workshop
Readers have also been focusing on story structure. After watching a brief Toy Story clip students clearly grasped the concept of characters, setting and plot and were able to apply these elements to an excerpt from Because of Winn Dixie.. Students zoomed in on long and short vowel sounds and identified how prefixes change the meaning of root words.

Science
Next week we will observe and compare three soil types, gravel, sand and topsoil. Scientist will conduct water absorption tests on each of these types and hopefully infer that different soils are suitable for different plants.

Writer's Workshop
Fiction writers are deep into realistic fiction plots! Students understand
that writers get ideas for stories from books they wished existed in the world. We also learned that writers of realistic fiction sometimes get inspired from small moments in their own lives, especially moments in which they experienced a strong emotion. We developed our main characters internal and external traits and wrote small “seed” scenes which highlight our characters motivations and struggles. Writers sketched plot mountains to identify the problem, rising action, climax and solution to their stories. Writers also recognize their role during a Writer’s Workshop conference. After role playing two hypothetical conferences, students are better prepared on how to approach a writing conference with the teacher.
