APWH Possible Credit for WH
NCDPI is aware of the potential changes with the current AP World History Course. After reviewing materials provided by the college board, NCDPI will recommend AP World History: Modern to serve as a fulfillment of a student’s graduation requirement for World History pending State Board approval in early 2019.
As always, we will keep you posted and updated with official and accurate information as soon any decisions or updates are made or are communicated to SC&I.

Deadlines for Some Summer Opportunities and Grants are Soon
The Winston-Salem Foundation Grant deadline is December 31, 2018.
The summer programs for the National Endowment for the Humanities have been announced. Deadlines for applying are March 1st. This flyer gives you a quick snapshot.
Webinars for PD
Ditch That Textbook Summit is a Winter Holiday extravaganza of PD from December 14 to December 31. Here are some of the topics from last year's sessions.
The National Humanities Center has several coming up in February and March. You can also view previously recorded webinars. Many of these have great clips that could be used in the classroom for core content subjects, AP classes, and electives. Use Edpuzzle to get the clip you wish to use.
Setting a Purpose for Reading and Annotating Text
Once the purpose for reading is established, provide students with annotation instructions to help guide them through the reading, as related to the purpose for reading. Rather than saying "explain your answer" or "explain why", use key phrases like "provide textual evidence" and, quantify answer expectations ("provide two pieces of textual evidence").
Finally, have students answer questions related to the purpose for reading. Scaffold questions as necessary. Make sure that the objective is addressed at the level of the verb. Here is an example.
Message from Melissa
Well, that was a fun week. I know some of you were happy the entire time, while others became a little overwhelmed as the week of Snowmageddon progressed. Worry over pacing, finals, and benchmarks was on some of your minds. For others, cabin fever set in due to being at home with the kiddos FOREVER.
The semester has been extended, so there is a little relief. The make-up days have been announced: March 29, June 7, June 10, and June 11. There is still one that needs to be decided. And, we have not made it to January yet. Geesh.
I have been at work since Tuesday. I scoured the benchmarks, created an EVAAS summary for each school and was able to check off some things that have been on my "To Do List" to finish or start for a while. There is a 6 Week AM1 Benchmark Hexagon Review, a CE U1 Hexagon activity started by Lindsey Parnell, a CE U1 primary source reading, and an AM2 U5 Hexagon activity. Of course, this was barely a dent in what I wanted to accomplish. But, there is always Winter Break!
So, how was your week off? Send me an e-mail of the most exciting thing you did (pictures would be awesome) to get entered into the Holiday movie giveaway. I have some $10 gift cards to AMC. Show me your fun times of Snowmageddon.
Have an amazing last week and a wonderful time over the holiday break!
Melissa
