cotton gin was invented in the United States in 1793 by Eli Whitney 1765–1825. Whitney applied for a patent on October 28, 1793 the patent was granted on March 14, 1794, but was not validated until 1807.

The cotton gin helped slavery grow it was the new gin that quickly spreaded across the South. This invention made it possible to grow large amounts of cotton on big farms and make money. So even though the cotton gin meant less people or slaves had to operate it, it made growing cotton more profitable so that more and more people planted more and more cotton. This meant they needed more slaves.
How the cotton gin work
The cotton was a simple invention. First, the cotton bolls were put into the top of the machine. Next, you turn the handle, which turns the cotton through the wire that combs out the seeds. Then the cotton is pulled out of the wire teeth and out of the cotton gin
