AMS Suicide Prevention and Awareness

During the months of September and October, our school district will focus on suicide awareness and prevention. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth between 10 and 19 years of age. We know that suicide is preventable.

Youth who are contemplating suicide give warning signs of their distress. Parents, teachers and friends are in a key position to notice these signs and to help. It is imperative for all to understand that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. We as a school district believe it is important to educate our staff, students and community about the warning signs. No one should ever take these warning signs lightly or promise to keep them secret. We understand that this topic can be difficult and overwhelming, yet we know that keeping this an ongoing conversation can make a difference.

We as Millard Public Schools want our students to feel safe and supported. Students in grades 6 through 12 will be educated on the warning signs of depression and suicidal thoughts. They will also discuss the fact that youth who feel suicidal are not likely to seek help directly. However peers can recognize the warning signs and take immediate actions to keep each other safe.

We will give each student and staff member a Safe 2 Help card with a number to call whenever a student, parent or staff member has seen these warning signs in another individual. We encourage everyone to keep these cards and share them with their families. This hotline allows individuals to remain anonymous while supporting their fellow peers and stands to empower individuals, our youth and families within Millard Public Schools. With all adults and students in our school community standing together and committed to making suicide prevention a priority, we can help youth before they engage in behavior with potentially fatal consequences.
