Reading Strategies
Wondering how to help your child read at home? Try these :)
- Stretch the sounds out s-l-o-w-l-y. Then blend them together.
- Flip the sounds. Try the long and short vowel sounds
- Try a word and ask, "Does this make sense?"
- Skip the word and read the rest of the sentence. Then hop back and reread.
- Look at the pictures for clues.
- Get your mouth ready to make the first sound
- Look for chunks or word parts you know.
Writing
First Grade young authors are off & running! We are very busy writing during Daily Five, Morning Journals, and Responding toNon-fiction and Fiction Literature. Mini-lessons are taught during Writing Workshop and students apply what they have learned to their writing. Writing is a wonderful opportunity to express ideas with words & illustrations.
Math
We continue to work in the first module in Eureka Math. Students are working toward fluency with addition and subtraction of numbers to 10. We are continuing to reinforce the strategies of counting on and counting all, as well using number bonds and math pictures to solve math equations. We look forward to problem solving with teen numbers and using more complex strategies that involve working with 10 as a basic unit.
Social Studies & Science
First grade scientists are eager to explore our STEMscopes inquiry based modules following the IDEA model: Illuminate, Do, Expand, & Assess. Students are observing and graphing Seasonal Patterns this month using the 5 Es~ Engaging, Exploring, Explaining, Elaborating, and Evaluating. In Social Studies students enjoyed learning more about Community Helpers and Christopher Columbus' journey to America this month.
