Puerto Rican Vacation
San Juan Galore By Miles Hermann
Overview
San Juan was founded in 1521 by Ponce de Léon. It is also the oldest city under US jurisdiction. Before it was founded, Columbus discovered Puerto Rico, and he called San Juan, "San Juan Bautista" in honor of John the Baptist. It wasn't until 1508 that the Spanish government elected Ponce de Léon as governor of the island. The present metropolitan area quickly became Spain's most important military outpost in the Carribean. That area is now known as Old San Juan. Forts and historic buildings fill Old San Juan with amazing architecture.
