Cold Weather Is Here!
- Label, Label, Label! You would be surprised how many children have black snow pants in a size 6. To avoid confusion label tags with a permanent marker. If the tag is black, use a white paint marker or nail polish.
- Check with your child every day to make sure their stuff is with them. You don't want to find out a week later that they have been missing gloves, or a hat.
- If you are missing any items, please come check our lost and found table. We collect a lot of items over the year. All these items can be found on the table right outside the office!
- Please practice getting ready with your child. Practice the order your child should get his/her stuff on. Practice zipping coats up and getting boots and gloves on. If every child needs help zipping coats, getting boots on, and getting mittens on it cuts into their recess time and makes them frustrated.
- Keep in mind that students have outside recess unless the windchill is below zero. Make sure that your child has proper outside gear.
- Its always a good idea to send an extra outfit in a ziplock with your child. If snow pants leak through or socks get wet, we can't always guarantee that we will have clothing for your child to change into. Avoid a call to bring clothes by packing them in their backpack ahead of time!
Mrs. Corcoran's Art Class Update!
For young 5's we have been working on developing fine motor skills. We have been drawing, cutting and gluing. Recently we drew different kinds of lines in crayons. Zigzag lines, wavy lines, loopy lines, etc. and then used water paint to show how the wax in the crayon resists. the paint.
In kindergarten through second grade we have been working on the District Wide Christmas Card Contest. Students are designing original cards in hopes of being chosen to represent the district. We have been talking about composition, taking our time, learning how to do bubble letters and spelling correctly. I show different examples of cards and model how to draw different subject matter, but students use their own creativity and ideas to create their card.
Third graders are finishing up a lesson on weaving. Students learn that weaving is done around the globe, on every continent. We look at examples from around the world and also from the United States. Students create their own loom by using cardboard. We create small scale weavings that could be used as bracelets. Weaving helps develop fine motor skills and the children have done an amazing job.
Art allows students to explore different materials, have a hands on experience, problem solve, make decisions, and create authentic work that represents their skills and interests.
"The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer"
