Social Emotional Learning

According to, SEL is the "process through which students acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and and make responsible decisions. Effective SEL involves a combination of direct instruction of social and emotional skills and competencies, embedding SEL into existing curriculum, and modeling.

of the documentary

7:00-8:30 pm Community Screening (all are welcome)

Student Screenings will be held in the Braves Gym. Parents are welcome to attend. Please RSVP so that we can prepare accordingly. The Community Screening will be held in the DPM Auditorium and there will be a discussion with expert panel immediately following.

To spark discussion and generate awareness of the impact social media has on our lives, Lake Forest School District 67 is hosting 3 screenings of the compelling documentary LIKE. More than 2 billion people have smartphones today. On average, we check our phones an incredible 150 times every day. Technology makes our lives easier in so many ways - but what is the cost of our dependence, and our children’s reliance, on screens? LIKE reveals the true effects of technology on the brain and uncovers the impact social media can have on our lives. The film’s mission is to educate, inform and inspire people to effectively self-regulate their screen time. The student screenings of LIKE will be followed by a brief Q & A session led by social workers. The evening screening will be followed by an informative panel discussion featuring local experts.

The event is free of cost and open to the public. The goal of the screening is to raise awareness about the hidden costs of social media as well as start a conversation about how to ensure our own, and our children’s, healthy use of technology. Among the experts and special guests are:

Lions Quest

District 67 has adopted the evidence-based Lions Quest resource for teaching SEL. Lions Quest is an evidence-based PreK-8 program that integrates social and emotional learning, character development, drug and bullying prevention, and service-learning. Through a series of developmentally appropriate thematic units and lesson plans, the program helps create a school and classroom environment that promotes the positive student behaviors that lead to greater social, emotional, and academic success. D67 has purchased grade-level kits which include materials for implementation.

We are in the first year of systemic implementation of K-8 guaranteed SEL curriculum. Students will receive a minimum of 7 Lions Quest lessons throughout the year. The lessons have been selected to address the following:

  1. What is SEL?
  2. Self-Awareness
  3. Self-Management
  4. Mindfulness
  5. Social Awareness
  6. Relationship Skills
  7. Responsible Decision making
