FOOTBALL LOCKER ROOM GETS MAKEOVER
Seniors with Mark Vanderheyden of the Thirty-Six Saloon are Logan White, Christian Young, Jaylen Crull, Jorden Wood, Curtis Stultz, Vanderheyden, Clay Barker, Austin Petrillo, Seth Bollinger, Josh Thurman and JT O’Brien.
The Parke Heritage High School football locker room has received a partial makeover thanks to the donations of local businesses and individuals.
The locker room now has 28 metal lockers, epoxy coated flooring, and newly-painted walls. The center of the locker room was opened up to make it more functional for team meetings, film study, etc.
These upgraded facilities were made possible thanks to a $10,000 donation from Mark Vanderheyden of the Thirty-Six Saloon, who donated the lockers. For their donation, The Thirty-Six Saloon was recognized at the North Central football game where the restaurant and the owner was presented a team jersey.
A $3,000 donation from former Rox player Jake Bassett and Scott Pet Products was used towards the new hard epoxy coated flooring. Rock Hard Coatings completed the work of filling old cracks and giving the flooring a major facelift.
A donation of $1,500 from the Parke Heritage High School Booster Club was used to purchase paint supplies for the entire facility. Gene Smith provided his skills to paint the entire locker room.
Those who also donated time to the project include Mark Vanderheyden, Mike Neeley, Mike Woody, Gene Baxter, Riley Baxter, and Andy Willhite for the demolition work and pouring concrete. Billy Bettis and Lindsay Berry along with Joe and Angie Neeley assembled and installed the lockers.
“If we are going to build a first class program, we have to have first class facilities,” said Assistant Coach Billy Bettis. “We wanted this new locker room to be a place where the kids would want to hangout and spend their time, it’s been exactly that.”

WONDERS OF THE WETLAND
Parke Heritage eighth grade students attended the Wonders of Wetlands Field Trip held out at Duke Energy Cayuga Station.
Students were able to have hands-on learning experiences with pond ecology, hellbenders, bats, functions, values, and wetlands vegetation, hydrology, river ecology, engineering, and riparian buffers.
The students enjoyed the River Ecology station where they met with one of the Duke Scientists and learned how the river is monitored one mile upstream and downstream of the plant and learned about the over 100 species of fish that are found on the river.
At the Pond Ecology station, another Duke Scientist demonstrated how they can capture macroinvertebrates and determine the overall health of a wetland or body of water by the presence or lack of these species if the waters are troubled. Smaller species are affected first by pollution or changes in the water.
Hellbender and salamanders was another station where a research scientist from Purdue shared with students the story behind the endangered Hellbender species of Indiana, how Purdue is actively trying to help this species survive and repopulate areas of the Blue River where this specie is located.
The Hydrology station was set up by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Parke and Vermillion Counties. Students learned how drinking water is filtered so they can have it in their homes. Students were then challenged by the station and had to create a filtering system using rocks, cotton balls, make-up pads, coffee filter and popsicle sticks. The team that filtered the clearest water from the river won. The students were introduced to many topics that they will cover this year as part of their eighth grade science standards.
Thank you to all of the sponsors, presenters, teachers, and volunteers that make this such a great event. A special thank you to Duke Energy for making this event possible.
NEW MEDICAL SERVICES
A new medical option is being offered to students and staff of North Central Parke Schools. Primary care services are now being provided on site at Rockville Elementary School and Parke Heritage High School by Valley Professionals Community Health Center.
Christi Busenbark, nurse practitioner and Amy Clarkson, site manager, are seeing patients at these added sites on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Though the clinic is housed at these sites, Turkey Run Elementary and Parke Heritage Middle School students are encouraged to use these services as well.
Students and NCP staff members are eligible to receive health care services for immunizations, wellness exams as well as sick child visits.
“Our goal is to assist the school, parents and students in making medical services easily accessible,” said Busenbark. “We will see all students who are not feeling well on the same day we are present in the school.”
The on-site clinic is an additional service to the Mobile Health Bus that travels to Turkey Run Elementary and Parke Heritage Middle School. Information and schedule for the Mobile Health Bus can be found at https://valleyprohealth.org/mobile/
Behavioral health services are also being provided by trained providers. These services are for a student who needs assistance with behavioral and/or emotional challenges and are tailored to student needs.
For more information on all the services that Valley Professionals Community Health Center provides, visit their website at https://valleyprohealth.org/
ONE HAND SPEAKS
AlejAndro, who was born with one hand, expressed his message that for him having one hand is normal. Admittedly, he has had to learn to adapt to how he does certain daily activities.
“Some things just don’t work for me,” he said. “I can do everything you can do it’s just different. I’ve learned it’s OK to ask for help.”
He taught martial arts for many years and has a third degree black belt in Aikido while also holding black belts in Kajukenpo Karate and Dan Zan Ryu Jujitsu.
One of the challenges he has faced is finding a job. “People don’t want to give me a job because they don’t think I can do it,” he said. “I’ve worked for free several times and then been hired because I could do the work. I know how to work hard and I’ve learned how to work.”
During his talk, he answered students’ questions about what he can do with one hand as well as the challenges that he faces. He also showed them how he can do tasks such as putting on a watch, tying a shoe and buttoning a button.
“When people stare at me, they look at my arm instead of my face,” he said. “I have a good daily life because I want it to be. Just because you have a hard start doesn’t mean you can’t have a strong finish.”
AlejAndro’s visit was sponsored by Experience Technology out of Bloomington.
SEE YOU AT THE POLE
This is a day for students to gather around the school's flagpole and reflect. Students met at 7:30 a.m. for a time of reflection, then had donuts and milk/juice.
Breakfast items were provided by the Bloomingdale Friends Church at the middle school. Those helping with the event at the middle school were Scott Miller, Bonnie Hobbs, Sarabeth Marcinko, Jake Miller, JeanAnn Craycraft and Wilma Wooten.
At the high school site, Rockville Christian Church and Faithbridge Church provided refreshments.
There were about 40 students, staff, and community members in attendance. Members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) organized the event.
REUNIFICATION DRILL
Turkey Run Elementary and Parke Heritage Middle School will be participating in an Emergency Evacuation Drill on Thursday, October 3. As a part of the drill, the students and staff will complete the steps needed in the event of an actual emergency by moving to their designated reunification location. In the interest of preparedness and our commitment to school safety, this drill will help out students, staff and first responders in their understanding in the event of a crisis. The schools will be working with local authorities to coordinate the drill and reunification process.
