Room #135 News!
Welcome to Mrs. Blevins' Online News Broadcast!
Our classroom stresses the importance of working at one's full potential. The students are given opportunities to do their personal best during every activity. In order to determine your child's needs, continuous assessment takes place. All activities are designed so that every student in our classroom is working at a challenging and rewarding level. Throughout the school year, I promote working together to create an open teacher-parent-student communication relationship I feel it is in your child's best interest if we work together and stay in contact with one another in order for him/her to be successful! Feel free to navigate the Blevins Broadcast at your convenience where you will find classroom news, slideshows, upcoming events, our week at a glance, a note from the teacher, and other pertinent information.
I would like to introduce my daughter, Ava Lynn Blevins! Thank you for all the warm welcoming back and the loving support from all you wonderful parents for thinking of me during this special time.

Family Science Night is being held again this year on January 28th. It will take place at the Flushing Middle School from 5:30 - 7:00. This is a free event for all Flushing Elementary and ECC students. There will be a variety of hands-on stations that can be rotated through at your choice. Some stations will have materials that may be taken as a little "souvenir" from science night! We look forward to an even bigger turn our this year...please save the date!
Our Week at a Glance
We completed Topic 12: Rates and Ratios. Today we took the Topic 12 Test. We reviewed all week for it. I feel confident that the students did extremely well on it! Next week, we will begin Topic 13: Solving Proportions. Reminder: Your child is responsible for coming to me to ask to retake an assessment. Please continue to check your child's binder for grades.
We have started the new novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. Students will be quizzed over chapters 3-5 next week covering setting, and characterization from the packet. We also focused on making connections and vocabulary. We will also begin our new January SCOPE magazine informational reading. Next week, we will continue to read ROTHMC.
Students have been also building stamina this week from independent reading at the end of the school day. Ask your child how minutes we are up to now! With our stamina goal in mind, we are also continuing to pursue the 40 book challenge. Please ask your child how many books they read so far this year. I have been conferring one-on-one with them to make sure they are reading "Just Right Books" that pertain to their interests so they can reach their 40 book goal by the end of the year.
Reading Logs: We have also started a new reading log. Please remind your child to read 20 minutes every day outside of school. Reading with your son or daughter is a great way to spend time to learn about their reading interests! Reading logs can be found on my website if your child misplaces theirs. There is a direct link below as well.
This week, students have built fluency with writing prompts. We will continue this next week as well as language writing in our Common Core Progress booklets. We will be starting our new writing unit, Informational Essay, at the beginning of February. Ask your child what they wrote about when reflecting on our experience at the North-End Soup Kitchen!
Students have been learning about climate and vegetation in Canada this week and today we took the quiz on it. Next week, we will be reviewing Canada's Landforms, climate, and vegetation for the test on Friday!
Today we took the "junct, join" = meet or join quiz. Next week, we will be studying the new Greek Root Word(s) "rupt" = "break." The word study lists can be found on my webpage under the Word Study tab. Tests are every other Friday covering two root words.
