Mrs. Sharkey's Class News

Important Updates and Information

Mrs. Avery

Hello Forest Glen Families! My name is Mrs. Avery and I will be the long-term substitute teacher during Mrs. Sharkey's maternity leave. I have been a substitute teacher in the Howard Suamico School District for the past 4 years, and have also been a parent volunteer within the district. I am excited to be at Forest Glen and look forward to working together with you and your child over the next few months. If you have any questions or would like to contact me, feel free to send an email to annaver@hssd.k12.wi.us.

Thank You!

What We're Learning

Literacy

In Reader's Workshop, we have been focusing on ways we can read words with accuracy and fluency to help build our comprehension. We have focused on:

  • reading words by looking at the picture (eagle eye strategy)
  • reading words by looking at the first letter sound (lips the fish strategy)
  • reading and recognizing sight words right away
  • re-reading sentences to practice smooth reading

As a class, we discovered that we know a lot of words already! Many of these words are the sight words that we have been adding to the board each week.

Please remind your child to bring their "Book Bag" back to school each day. We will be using these books during our guided reading groups. Thank you!

Please be sure your child reads their sight word book to you during the week. Students will earn a Timbertail Token for returning the book with 3 signatures! This book will become part of their read to self book box.

Word of the Week: it

Writing

This week we learned how to write the letter Q.

In Writer's Workshop, we improved our writing by focusing on using our strategies to fix the spelling of words we know. We then celebrated our accomplishments by sharing our favorite part of the story with the class. The students enjoyed a 'smarties' candy treat to celebrate our hard work as "Super Writers!"

Math

Our focus this week has been on reviewing adding and subtracting within 5, showing tens and ones, making new shapes, and classifying shapes.

Content

This week we reviewed wants/needs and communities and community helpers. Students completed the assessment for both of these concepts. We will begin our new content in January, which will focus on force and motion.

Other

Congratulations to Mrs. Sharkey on the birth of her baby boy, Walden! I did share a picture of her new baby with the class on Monday.

Please be sure to send a winter coat, gloves or mittens and a hat with your child to school everyday!

The calendar has students listed who may bring one item for show and tell on Fridays. I will rotate through 4 students every Friday that we have a full day of school. Please make sure you are comfortable sending the item to school. Please label the item with the student's name. Thank you!

The calendar also has a student listed on Monday as the, "Star of the Week." I will send home the forms that need to be completed and brought back to school on the Monday that the student is assigned, "Star of the Week."
