Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas Break! We started the new year coming up with some goals for 2017. We will check on these goals in a month and see how they are doing on them.
We began learning about pronouns. The 6th graders should now know how to identify pronouns and use them correctly. We are working through some practice problems, doing some activities on noredink.com and they will be taking a quiz next week on pronouns. They can use their notes. They are getting better at keeping their notes organized, which really helps them out during the quiz.
They also picked books and groups for lit. circles. Week one is due January 16th. Week two is due January 23rd and the whole book is due with the final lit. circle group meeting on January 31st. They need to read a section of the book each week and complete a task worksheet, so they have information to discuss with their groups.
We will be doing MAPS testing in ELA next Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats something the morning of testing. It really makes a difference!
Enjoy the weekend!

This week in sixth grade math we started learning about percents and how often they are used in everyday life. We also learned how to convert between fractions, decimals and percents.
Next week we will continue our work with percents in learning how to calculate percent of a number. The students will then learn how to apply this to finding tax, tip and discount.
* Students are allowed to use calculators in the lesson on tax, tip and discount. They should each have their own calculator here at school. The calculators do not need to be fancy, the basic ones will work just fine! Thanks!
Have a great weekend! Stay warm!

We wrapped up work on Colonial America. We reviewed for three days to prepare for the chapter test. They took the test on Friday. I am doing a something a little different with the essay question for this test. They have received the essay question ahead of time. They need to complete this for Monday. They can use their book and other resources to help answer this question. Encourage them to use correct vocabulary, spelling, and grammar as they work on fully answering this question. This essay question will be part of the chapter 3 test grade. Next week we will work on a project dealing with Colonial America. In small groups they are going to be land surveyors trying to find the best place to locate a new colony. This should be a fun project that will work on collaboration and presentation skills. Have a great weekend.
