WEAR RED FOR DYSLEXIA AWARENESS ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Together, we can make a Dyslexia Difference!
Did you know that October is Dyslexia Awareness Month?
I would like to share some helpful information with you to celebrate The Dyslexia Difference.
DYSLEXIA FACTS!
Dyslexia affects nearly 10% of the population.
Dyslexia is by far the most common learning disability (we prefer the word difference!).
A study at Yale found that the numbers of girls and boys who have dyslexia are about the same.
Dyslexia commonly runs in families.
Children don't outgrow dyslexia.
Some of the most brilliant minds of our time have been known to have dyslexia: Albert Einstein, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and John Lennon, to mention a few.
There are people with dyslexia in many types of highly respected careers such as: Tom Cruise, Danny Glover, Cher, Magic Johnson, Carl Lewis, Bruce Jenner, and General George Patton.
SYLLABLES ROCK!
Teaching readers about the Six Syllable Types is at the heart of all reading instruction. This week I will focus on Closed Syllables. A Closed Syllable ends with a consonant. A vowel in a closed syllable makes the short vowel sound. Cat, sit, cot, sun are all one syllable words that are closed syllables. Multisyllabic words such as basket, magnet, and napkin are two syllable words and both syllables are closed. In the words begin, item, and basic the second syllable is closed.
Wondering what syllable type is in the first syllable of begin, item, and basic? Stayed tuned for next week’s syllable type! 😊
Front Car Arrival and Dismissal
For afternoon dismissal, all cars waiting to pick-up students in the front carpool area should line up on Fry Rd. ONLY. Do NOT park or line-up on Lake Crossing Lane as it causes congestion for Pre-K dismissal and is a safety concern for student walkers crossing Fry Rd.
Please refer to the MGE Handbook file below for all procedures and those related to student transportation.
Counselor's Corner
This month we have been focusing on COOPERATION. COOPERATION is working together and helping each other. In guidance lessons with the counselor this month, students have learned through cooperation games how good listening, accepting of others ideas’, encouragement, and helping each other helps us be successful in working as a group or a team. Students have also been reminded that it takes COOPERATION and being an UPSTANDER to prevent bullying at our school. It takes everyone from Pre-K-5th grade as well as the school community to work together to be a school of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
Grizzly Goal: Unity Day-Wear ORANGE on Wednesday, October 20th. “Together against bullying. UNITED for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.” Remember to wear ORANGE on Oct. 20th for house points!
Red Ribbon Week is the week of Monday, October 25th to Friday, October 29th! Our theme this year is "Drug Free Looks Like Me." Thank you to Erin O'Kelly our PTA coordinator for Red Ribbon Week for all your hard work! See handout for theme days to participate.

Junior Achievement Volunteers Needed
Junior Achievement (JA) is a program that teaches students about the economy, the workplace, money management and business transactions. At Griffin we teach “JA in a Day” meaning that all students will complete all JA lessons on one school day. This is a unique opportunity for volunteers to spend the day in the classroom, teaching the prepared lessons and interacting with students from 8:30 – 2:30 on the scheduled day, typically a Friday. If you are interested in teaching JA for 5th grade on October 29th, please use the following Sign-up Genius link.
