Volcanic Eruptions

Describe pyroclastic materials and lava

What is pyroclastic material?

Pyroclastic material are fragments of rock that form during a volcanic eruption. Pyroclastic material has high viscosity which is Felsic magma. It is light colored made out of silica and feldspar, and has more trapped gases. When a volcano erupts the dissolved gases in the lava escape and send molten and solid particles shooting into the air. Pyroclastic material is not wet like magma. It is made out of magma, but once it ejects from the volcano it turns into dust and ash which is very dry. During a volcanic eruption, the volcano violently ejects ash, blocks, dust, and other pyroclastic materials.

The five types of pyroclastic material

There are five types of Pyroclastic Material. Volcanic ash are Pyroclastic particles that are less than 2 mm in diameter. Volcanic dust is volcanic ash that is less than 0.25 mm in diameter. Most of the volcanic dust and ash immediately settles on the land that surrounds the volcano. Some of the smallest dust particles travel around the Earth in the upper atmosphere. Lapilli are large pyroclastic particles that are less than 64 mm in diameter. The word Lapilli is from a Latin word that means "little stones." Lapilli falls near the vent.

When lava ejects out of a volcano it throws out large clots, which is a lot of lava stuck together. When the lava barely ejects it is burning hot. However, as it spins through the air it cools and develops a round or spindle shape. This pyroclastic material is in known as Volcanic bombs. There are large pyroclastic materials that form from solid rock that is blasted from the vent, they are called Volcanic blocks. They can be as big as a small house.

What are the three types of mafic magma?

There are two types of magma which are Felsic and Mafic. Mafic magma is made of magnesium and iron. It has low viscosity. It also has less trapped gases and is dark colored. There are three types of lava which are Pahoehoe, Aa, and Blocky lava.
