Weekly Update for 10-20-19
Joan MacQueen Middle School
Principal Message
Dear JMMS Families,
It was another fantastic week at Joan MacQueen! Our Dust Devils participated in this year's first Cross Country meet and a number of students earned medals and set personal best times. Thank you, Mrs. Flowers, for your coaching and dedication to the students.
Halloween is almost here. Please review the following JMMS Halloween Costume Guidelines. We are looking forward to the students dressing up!
All costume preparations are to be completed at home. No dressing or applying of makeup or colored hairspray once students arrive at school.
Student costumes need to be respectful of body images and should not emphasize negative stereotypes of any person, gender, or ethnicity. Cultural sensitivity is required.
The following are NOT allowed: weapons (fake or real), full head/face masks or gore.
No masks are to be worn during the school day. Face makeup is okay.
No costumes that promote the use of illegal substances or activities, or are derogatory, violent or disrespectful. Teachers may take away any accessory that is being used improperly or is considered inappropriate for school. School rules regarding the dress code must be followed.
Students wearing inappropriate costumes will be required to change into their PE clothes.
Costumes should not be so large or cumbersome that it prevents the child from sitting comfortably in his/her desk. Students who have questions about the acceptability of their costume should check with the Principal.
Students should not interfere with another person’s costume. Students spend a lot of time, thought, money and energy in preparing their costume. We do not want their costume damaged by another student.
After-School Tutoring has begun and our initial numbers have not been as high as I would like, all students are encouraged to attend. There are teachers focusing on Science, Math, English and Social Studies each night. Students who earned a C- or below on the first progress notice are especially encouraged to attend.
