WEEK OF OCTOBER 29-NOVEMBER 2, 2018
CONGRATULATIONS TO 3 OF OUR TOP PRINCIPALS FOR THEIR LEADERSHIP IN THE NORTHWEST ELEMENTARY CLUSTER!
JOE MAY
Joe May Elementary hosted BUILD Initiative as a part of the Project HOPE Leadership Institute.
Participants were deeply moved by the visit. Because of the campuses participation, leaders from other states were able to reflect on tangible ways they could improve early childhood outcomes in their state at multiple levels. On reflection sheets and evaluations, participants expressed their appreciation of the site visit and the energy of the staff and parents. One leader wrote, “ The stories of those being served must be valued.”
Many participants felt that the site visit helped give them new motivation for their work. Another state leader wrote that they would “ Build in parent beneficiary voice to all work and create a feedback loop that communicates up and down the entire system.”
The campus had a tremendous impact on all the participants. Thank you Mr. Rivera and your team for always opening up your campus for others to learn from. Way to go Joe May proud to have you as one of the campuses representing the Northwest Network!

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Illustrious Leaders,
What a week of ongoing Professional Development opportunities that our Cluster has had! Thank you so much to our CIC's and Teacher leaders who led PD on Monday and Tuesday at Joe May Elementary. It has truly been so inspirational to see so many teachers from our Cluster take advantage of these opportunities. I would also like to thank our Principals and Assistant Principals who modeled setting the expectations that PD is important. It starts with the leader, which is why I have made it a personal/professional goal to ensure that I too am setting that expectation by being present at every CILT and PD session offered in our Cluster. Lastly, I want to thank Mr. Rivera for always being so open to hosting our PD's or any event for our Cluster and the District. I can truly say that we ALL have been Sharpening our Saws-Habit 7.
As you come to the completion of our 2nd PD round with Jiv Daya, the next expectation is to put the learning into action. I can not wait to see our scholars diving deep into using the apps presented at PD on their Kindles: Seesaw, Google Classroom and Quizis.
Next week marks the end of the 2nd Six weeks for our scholars. Just a reminder to follow the testing schedule I have outlined for our cluster. Ensure that interventions are being provided for the students based on what they currently have in the classroom. The 2nd six weeks data will be the pivotal point in what instructional moves should be made in order to ensure Good First Instruction. The goal is to ensure that your campuses are showing growth from the first six weeks. If your campuses are not showing growth, there is a gap and you MUST approach things differently. Remember, you can not do the same thing and get different results. Change is inevitable.
Here is to a productive week of teaching, learning, growing, leading and most definitely TESTING!

As you reflect on your coaching feedback with your teachers this week, read the article so you can better prepare for upcoming feedback sessions. 1. Identify the situation. 2. Clearly state the behavior the teacher that we want to change. 3. State the impact created from the behavior. 4. Ask questions or state action steps to adjust the change in behavior.

Connect with Reading
When should phonics instruction start?
Phonics instruction is most effective when it begins in kindergarten or first grade. To be effective with young learners, instruction must be designed appropriately and taught carefully. It should include teaching letter shapes and names, phonemic awareness, and all major letter-sound relationships. It should ensure that all children learn these skills. As instruction proceeds, children should be taught to use this knowledge to read and write words.
Phonics should also be used with struggling readers across grade levels. Phonics can be used with upper grades through activities such as word origins, prefixes, and suffixes.
