Recent Changes to the Dress Code:
Making changes to the dress code is a process! Last spring, the District Education Improvement Committee met to review the dress code and made suggestions for changes to it based on input from the team members. Those recommendations were reviewed by the administrative team and the accepted changes are underlined and in bold below:
1. Dresses and non-uniform clothing must be of sufficient length to allow for performing normal school functions without immodest exposure. All outer garments (skirts, shorts, dresses, shirts worn over tights, etc.) are required to be no shorter than fingertip length. Spandex shorts, tights, and leggings are allowed ONLY with an outer garment that meets the fingertip policy. Undergarments must not be visible. Garters and garter belts are considered undergarments.
2. Modesty will prevail. No low cut tops or muscle shirts. See-through/sheer material is ONLY permitted when worn over an article of clothing that is dress code compliant. Clothing that is torn, or with holes placed above fingertip length is prohibited. Pants, skirts, and/or shorts must cover all skin above the fingertip length.
3. Halter tops, low cut tops, and other similar clothing which reveals bare midriffs, bare backs, and low cut fronts may not be worn.
4. Clothing should be of the appropriate size. Clothing cannot be baggy or saggy, worn low on the body, nor drag on the ground.
5. Shirts will be buttoned properly. Tank tops are NOT permitted.**
6. Trench coats are prohibited.
7. Hats and/or caps will not be worn inside during the academic school day.
8. No bandannas, rags, gloves, kerchiefs, or gang-related decorative articles. No visible gang-related tattoos.
9. Hanging wallet chains, banging belt ends, spiked/studded belts, bracelets, necklaces, chain belts, handcuffs; or sharp/heavy rings are not permitted.
10. Visible body piercing, with the exception of earrings, is prohibited.
11. Sunglasses may not be worn in school buildings without specific recommendation from a doctor.
12. Mustaches, beards, and sideburns must be well groomed. Grooming is at the discretion of the principal.
13. Shoes that mark the floor are prohibited.
14. Student dress or jewelry may not display information pertaining to profanity, obscenity, sexual connotations, ethnic slurs, death, tobacco, alcohol or other prohibited substances.
** - Note: Sleeveless shirts are no longer prohibited. "Sleeveless shirts" are defined as shirts or button downs that do not have sleeves. This does not include tank tops or shirts with straps. Modesty must prevail.

Dear Parents,
We hope you had a wonderful summer, and would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2014-2015 school year! As you may already know, Aramark K-12 Education provides food service for your child’s school. If you are not yet aware, Aramark will be Lago Vista ISD partner for the school food service. We are very excited to be here and look forward to serving you and your children.
We assure you that we take our responsibility as your food service partner seriously, putting your child’s well-being above everything. Aramark is happy to provide nutritious and exciting recipes and menus, vibrant dining environments, and nutrition and wellness programs and communications that will encourage your child to eat healthy and exercise to maintain a well-balanced lifestyle.
We’d like to take this opportunity to share with you our programs and services for the new school year. You will also find these attachments with this letter:
- Monthly menus are posted on the district website under the Food Service tab.
- The free and reduced-priced application form that will be sent to District parents.
Our Menu Philosophy
Aramark is committed to providing safe, nutritious food, prepared fresh daily. We align with prominent
global food companies to buy the highest quality products available. Our menus are created from an extensive database of age-segmented recipes, developed by our Culinary Team of dietitians, chefs, and purchasing specialists. We collaborate with parents to accommodate the dietary requirements of students with special needs.
For your students, we offer a variety of meal choices with one goal in mind:
To provide outstanding service and high quality “kid-friendly” meals that meet or exceed the latest federal and state requirements. To reach this goal, we:
· Work directly with food processing partners to set new industry standards for healthier foods, by requiring all key products meet our criteria designed to reduce or eliminate fats, salt and sugars, and to add whole grains when possible.
· Incorporate wholesome, natural ingredients and source foods rich in fiber and essential vitamins and minerals, like whole grain breads, pastas and cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables (local when available); low fat or non- fat milk; other reduced fat dairy options; and lean, low fat chicken, beef and fish.
· Source high quality, safe foods with no added trans fats; hormone- and antibiotic-free dairy products; poultry raised without hormones and with only humane use of antibiotics; sustainably produced seafood; and cage-free eggs.
· Minimally-processed foods, and foods without artificial ingredients and high fructose corn syrup, are used wherever possible.
The products and cooking methods we use conserve food quality and nutrients, while limiting addition of fats and eliminating frying. So although you may see popular items like pizza and chicken nuggets on your menus, be assured that your child’s meal selections are lower in fat and salt, and contain healthy whole grains.
Lunch
Monthly menus from the school will be sent home with Elementary students. Lago Vista ISD district uses the NutriKids computerized meal accountability system. Please look for a detailed explanation of this system in a separate letter. The lunch price is $2.50 for elementary students. Lunch for students who qualify for reduced-priced lunch is $0.40. Each meal comes with milk. Students can purchase extra milk for $0.60.
Menus for Secondary students will be posted in the cafeteria/classroom and on the district website. The lunch price for middle is $2.75. The price for high school students is $2.75 and reduced-priced lunch is $.40. All secondary students who prepay or qualify for free or reduced-priced meals may go directly to the school cashier.
The newest regulatory changes to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) are reflected in the menus we offer your children this school year. All grain items will be whole grain-rich and for first time menus are planned to meet specific sodium limits for each grade group. There will continue to be age-appropriate calorie limits; larger servings of fruits and vegetables; and wider variety of grain and protein offerings. Vegetables offered will focus on nutrient dense dark green, red-orange and legume selections to provide essential vitamins, mineral and fiber.
Breakfast
Breakfast is served at all schools. The breakfast menu consists of breakfast tacos, scrambled eggs with bacon & toast, cereal & toast, fresh fruit, 100% fruit juice & milk. The cost of elementary breakfast is
$1.60 and $1.75 for middle & high school students; reduced-price breakfast is $0.30. Breakfast is served in the lunchroom 30 minutes before the start of school.
This year, the School Breakfast Program (SBP) will undergo changes similar to those implemented in the lunch program. There will be age-appropriate calorie limits for 3 grade groups (K-5, 6-8, and 9-12). Students will be able to select from a variety of grains, fruit/vegetables and milk. All breakfast meals will include zero grams of added trans fat per portion and must offer at least 1 serving of grain each day, many of which will be whole grain-rich. Schools must offer at least a ½ cup of fruit and/or vegetables and 1 cup of fat free (unflavored or flavored) or low fat (unflavored) milk to all age groups. (Schools may offer a meat/meat alternate but it is not mandatory.)
Point-of-Sale System
The POS system benefits the District and your students in a number of practical ways. We hope that you and your students will consider taking advantage of some of these convenient options. Please read the following information carefully.
We will be using a computerized cash register system to ease the payment process for your child. Here’s how it works:
- You can add money to your child’s account by filling out an envelope and sealing the payment inside. Your child can drop this envelope with the cashier at each school with name & student ID on check
- The envelope should be clearly marked with your child’s name, grade, and homeroom. If the payment is for more than one child, indicate how the money should be split (for example, Johnny = $10.00 and Sally=$15.00).
- We encourage payment be made in the form of a check made out to “Lago Vista ISD Food Service
- Payment can be made in any amount to best suit your family budget. Students who have money on account will not have to worry about lunch money every morning and will proceed more quickly through the serving line at school.
- All students have been assigned an ID number to access their lunch account which works like a PIN for an ATM machine. Students will be issued these numbers the week before we start to serve lunch.
- Students will enter their ID number into a PIN pad prior to the cashier. Please help your child learn this number before school starts on August 25, 2014.
You will also have the ability to view and print out a copy of your child’s meal purchase history report. This history report will show all the dates and times that your child has purchased lunch within the past 30 days. Please be advised that when you first create your account, you will only be able to see your child’s history for that day. To view the 30-day history, log out and then sign back in again.
Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC)
The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity. There are four levels of performance awarded: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold Distinction.
In alignment with HUSSC, we are committed to serving nutritious meals to your students. This commitment is at the heart of how we deliver on our promise to help students flourish. We encourage students to embrace healthy eating and other lifestyle habits at an early age, and we understand that the District’s food and nutrition program plays a big role in this effort. We’re excited about the opportunity to work with the District to achieve HUSSC Recognition when possible.

If the income in your household changes during the school year, please feel free to fill out another application. Special Milk provides free milk to afternoon kindergarten students whose families meet the eligibility guidelines listed on the form. Food allergies and intolerances are increasing among our nation’s children.
