May Newsletter
DREAM... REACH...TOGETHER...ACHIEVE
May is here!
Dear Families,
It’s hard to believe that spring is here and May is upon us. Time is flying by! April brought us the opening of new adventures for Ladd Acres and in the months to come. We have several exciting things happening as we close down another successful school year.
April brought about the start of our Astro Academy: Motor Wellness room. This is a place where students come to re-center themselves, regulate their emotions and feelings so that they can re-enter the classroom as a successful learner. We always aim to address the social/emotional side of our Astros. This room provides the added boost needed for some of our students. Our Ladd Acres Community Learning Garden began construction, too. In the month to come, we will construct countless beds, a fence and hopefully a designated student area. (See below for more information.) Our Book Fair was a huge success, as was our Science Fair. Students participated in lively discourse centered on the scientific process. Thank you to our PTA for hosting the Book Fair and for funding the Science Fair guests and boards. These events help enrich our students’ lives. Finally, we started our state testing, called SBAC. Students in grades third through sixth are currently testing. If you have a child in one of those grade levels, please make sure they are having a well-balanced breakfast and getting a good night’s sleep. Good luck to all of our testing students.
Don’t miss out on the Family Carnival on May 19th, where you can participate in a cake walk, play games, get your face painted, jump in a bounce house, and dunk a teacher or two. This year, student artwork from Chinese class will be on display and students will also perform a song they have been practicing in the gym. This year is going to be a hit.
Have a wonderful May!
Warm wishes,
Francesca Sinapi

2017-2018 Student Environment Request Forms
In preparation for the 2017-2018 school year, student environment request forms will be available for parents. Environment request forms will be in the office starting May 8th and must be submitted by May 12th. Forms are NOT for requesting a specific teacher, as that is not a practice used at Ladd Acres. Rather, the forms are used as a tool for parent input in student placement in classes for the upcoming school year.
Please note that due to district decisions and changing enrollment, teacher assignments are not being announced until a further date which may be as late as August. Your patience is appreciated.
Incoming 2017 - 2018 Kindergartners
Kinder Bridge to Success - Last year we started the Kinder Bridge to Success and had a huge turnout. The two-day event allows incoming kindergartners the opportunity to meet teachers, specialists and support staff while becoming familiar with the school layout. This is also a great chance to make new Astro friends. If you have an incoming kindergartner, please put on your calendar Aug. 22nd and 23rd as dates to be at Ladd.
Chinese: Confucius Institute
Spring Break in China 2018 - Mrs. Cameron, sixth-grade teacher, is helping to head up a student trip to China during Spring Break 2018. Fundraisers will be starting this summer and will be ongoing throughout the fall and winter. The proceeds will go to offset the cost. If you are interested in sending your child (or attending with them), please look for the information letter coming home this week. The turnaround time line is very short!
ATTEND today, ACHIEVE tomorrow!
Every minute of every day matters in a child's education. Too many absences -- excused or unexcused -- can keep students from succeeding in school and in life. This page (http://www.hsd.k12.or.us/Parents/Resources/AttendAchieve.aspx) contains helpful facts and resources for understanding the importance of attendance and what schools, parents and communities can do to build good attendance habits.
BJ’s Restaurant Fundraiser
Join us for a delicious way to raise money at BJ’s Restaurant (7390 NE Cornell Rd., Hillsboro) on Thursday, May 11, from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. Twenty percent of food and soft beverage sales will be donated to Ladd Acres when you present a flyer and place an order. Proceeds will go towards our Artist/Writer in residence and two new Ladd Acres projects - the Astro Academy: Motor Wellness room and the Ladd Acres Community Learning Garden.
College and Career Week
Do you have an interesting occupation you would like to share with students? Would you like to inspire and ignite student interest in a career pathway you are familiar with? Please contact Sam Harding, our school counselor at hardings@hsd.k12.or.us. She is in the planning stages of our College and Career Week coming this June at Ladd Acres.
Ladd Acres Community Learning Garden
Our resident gardener lead, Mrs. Davidson, is currently looking for volunteers to help with building our new garden. If you are interested, please contact her at laddacresgarden@gmail.com. It is going to be a fantastic learning space for our students this fall!
