Gagarin's importance in the advancement of spaceflight
Yuri spent a lot of time in school and extra curricular activities, one of which was the local flying club where he became an Air cadet. After graduating from school he was drafted into the Soviet Air Force where he learned to pilot the MIG-15 which is a soviet jet. He excelled at piloting and quickly rose to the rank of Senior Lieutenant, but then was moved to the Soviet space program. He excelled at this aswell and was chosen for an elite group of pilots where he was trained to man the Vostok 1 space craft. In 1961 he was successfully launched into space making him the first human in space. After he returned to Earth he continuosly aided the Soviet space program in advancing space flight until his death in 1968.
