Bi-Weekly Newsletter 9/13
Hi everyone, my name is Ruth Thompson and I am at LMS full-time. I work for Communities in Schools of Brunswick County. I provide support services for students that need a little extra... Also, each week, I am doing the Super Student award. Teachers refer students to me who are doing an outstanding job in school and each week, one name from the list is randomly picked. That person wins a prize bag. Welcome back, everyone! (Thompson)
Happy new school year! All band students/parents need to join my Remind group for announcements and messages. The code is @a7g3d82. This is a different code from last year so everyone will need to rejoin if they were with me previously. My google class code is wuu5k5m. All band students will need to join. (Kirkland)
Students have been visiting the library and having a great time checking out books and exploring our online books. If there is anything still out from past years (books, chromebooks, chargers or hotspots) please bring them in. We are very excited to see students enjoying reading! (Gale)
Student Pictures Days
Please encourage your student to write articles for the Teen Scene. Leland Middle School is one of the schools who provide articles. There is a club at LMS advised each Friday by Ruth Thompson that allows students the opportunity to write.

What is Content Literacy? What is Content Math?
This year students' enrichment period also known as WIN has changed from the beginning of the morning to after Core 1. Students will work on math and reading skills during this time. On their report cards, you will either see Content Literacy or Content Math. Students who are taking Math 180 will have Content Math. Students who are not in Math 180 will have Content Literacy. During this time, students are learning from the following intervention programs: Math XL, Math 180/HMH, and Lexia. Teachers are also incorporating book studies to assist with literacy. Helping students to read and comprehend works hand in hand with reading math word problems. Our goal is assist your child in being successful as a middle school student, in preparation for high school.
Please call Dr. McDuffie if you have questions regarding WIN.
Thank you parents, for your ongoing support and your understanding of the various changes that have taken place this year at LMS! Because of you, I am....
Please remember to not drop your students off before 7:15 am. Our staff reports to their duty stations at 7:15. Dropping off students prior to this time, results in students being unsupervised which is a serious safety issue. Please adhere to this for the safety of our students. Also, please remember to pick your child up no later than 3:15 pm. Our staff's duty ends at 3:15. Therefore your child will be left unsupervised.
The school social worker have been reaching out to parents if this process is not being followed. Please help us, help you and your student(s).
Thank you for your support!!
Please encourage your child to check out books and visit the Library

We Say Farewell to Great Teachers
We have teachers who will move on in their careers: Mr. Chuck Smith, Ms. Jennifer Patterson and Ms. Tonya Mattocks. We will miss them and I am certain that our students will also. Ms. Mattocks' replacement will be Adam Rogerson, a retired teacher. Ms. Patterson will soon be replaced with a teacher who is in the hiring process. Mr. Smith will be replaced by Laverne Gore, who is an experience teacher from Onslow County Schools.
Thank you Mr. Smith, Ms. Patterson, and Ms. Mattocks for the positive impact that you have made on each of our students and the culture of LMS!
