A Note from Ms. Gullo, Principal

Welcome! Yellow Springs Elementary has had a great start to the 2019-2020 school year! We are glad to have the students back at school. A special welcome to our kindergarten families and our families new to Yellow Springs. I am happy and privileged to be the principal serving the Yellow Springs community. I have been an educator in Frederick County Public Schools for twenty-seven years serving as a teacher, media specialist, and administrator. Yellow Springs has been very welcoming to me and I look forward to working with all the students and families. Our students have been busy this week getting to know their teachers, classmates, and learning all the routines for the coming year. They have also discussed how they will SOAR as Yellow Springs Eagles. We SOAR by Striving for Excellence, Owning our Actions, Always showing Respect, and being Ready to Learn! It is going to be a great year!

Back to School Night - September 10, 2019

We hope you will be able to join us for Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 10th. Our evening will begin at 5:30 pm in the cafeteria with a PTA Back to School Fair and PTA Meeting to include a principal's report.

At 6:00 pm, our classroom presentations will begin with the first session occurring from 6:00 - 6:25 and a second session occurring from 6:30 - 6:55.

Social Emotional Learning Curriculum in Kindergarten, First & Second Grades

Frederick County Public Schools is pleased to share that we are implementing a curriculum to support social emotional learning in all elementary classes, grades K-2, in the 2019-2020 school year.

Prompting Alternative THinking Strategies (PATHS) is the curriculum chosen for use in our schools.

Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important part of each student’s healthy development. PATHS will teach SEL skills to help students succeed in school and life. SEL skills include handling emotions constructively, behaving responsibly, making good decisions, and developing caring, positive relationships. SEL contributes to a positive school climate, improvements in academic achievement, and reductions in bullying behavior.

The PATHS program teaches and reinforces many key aspects of SEL, shown through research to improve behavior, reduce conflict and improve academics. One FCPS elementary school used the program last year to support an overall focus on developing the whole child. It resulted in students’ increased attention in the classroom, increased ability to organize thoughts, improved behavior, and better use of conflict-resolution strategies. In the 2020-2021 school year, we plan to add PATHS for grades 3-5.

If you have any questions about social emotional learning or PATHS, please contact Ms. Gullo, principal, Ms. Johansen, school counselor, or FCPS Mental Health and Psychological Services Supervisor Ann McGreevy at 301-696-6880.

Lunch Out of Landfills

Yellow Springs Elementary is excited to be one of fourteen Frederick County Public Schools to participate in the Lunch Out of Landfills program to reduce the waste from school lunch going to landfills. At the end of each lunch period, our students are sorting their waste into bins for trash, recycling, and composting. We thank all the staff and volunteers who have helped get this initiative off the ground and help in saving our environment.

Lunch Money

There are several ways to add money to your child's lunch account. Payment can be made at school by cash or check by the student or the parent. If you wish to bring payment to the school, our cafeteria manager is available every day 7:30am-2:00pm. Payment can also be made with a credit card online at www.fcpsnutrition.com. Click on the "My School Bucks" logo on the right side of the screen to process your online payment. You will need to know your child's 8-digit student ID number. If you do not know your child's number, you can call the office for this information.

Yellow Springs a little Brighter

Yellow Spring Elementary School is a little brighter these days. The students returning has definitely brightened our days, but our lighting within the building is a little brighter. We have had most of the school refit with LED lighting. The project is almost complete and it is hoped that all LED lighting will be complete by Back to School Night.

Picture Days coming September 25th & September 26th

Please stay tuned for the schedule for individual school photos. Picture day fliers will be coming home soon.

School Attendance

Regular school attendance is important. If your child is not at school, our teachers cannot provide him/her with instruction. If a student is ill with a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or similar symptoms, we want him/her to stay home and get better.

Please know if you plan to take your child out of school for an extended period of time, the student will be given five days for vacation time and the rest of the absences will be marked unlawful. It is highly encouraged that families review the school calendar to review the days that school is in session and closed to plan times for your child to be out of school.

Volunteer Training Date Coming
