PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
On 10 May about fifty parents attended an information evening. Parents were invited to have a discussion and provide feedback given two questions:
What matters most to you about your child’s learning?
What information do you, as a parent, most want about your child?
The conversations were rich with a variety of views expressed. Some of these comments and ideas were recorded by those at the tables.
These charts compare the frequency with which the major themes were recorded. They illustrate the priorities of those who were part of the discussion on the evening. We thank you for this feedback and will continue to find ways to hear the voice of our community on these important topics.
Safety First Travelling To and From School
It is great to see so many children walking to and from school despite winter weather. For those who have to drop or collect children near school, I thank you for taking the time and thought to put safety first.
Thanks to parents for modelling sensible behaviour around traffic. This is especially important for children at primary school because they have yet to develop some of those parts of their brains related to judgement and decision-making. Whilst we are constantly encouraging children to make decisions, and take responsibility for themselves, safe behaviour going to and from school should be taught by families so that it is automatic. For example, exiting a vehicle on the pavement side of the car and using a pedestrian crossing where it is available. We back this up through school education programmes, but these are no substitute for learning from family.
Time to Arrive at School
A large number of children are arriving at school well before 8:20am which is the time they are allowed to class and is still 25 minutes before class begins. I remind families that our road patrol only begins at 8:20am, and there is no formal supervision of children at school until they go to class. Before school, Kilkenny Kids provide care, in the Hall, for those who need to bring children to school early. If you do not intend using this facility, in the interests of safety, please aim for your children to arrive after 8:20am.
Children Safe at Home
The following information I provide because the guidelines have changed fairly recently. I do not believe there is a widespread issue related to this within our community, but best to be informed.
New Zealand Law states that it is illegal to leave your child at home alone if they are under 14. If you leave them at home, you need to make sure they are safely supervised.
You can leave children under 14 at home if they are:
- supervised by a responsible person who is at least 14
- safe
- not left for a long time.
You need to judge if the situation is safe and reasonable — for example, it may be okay to leave your child with someone who is 14 for a few hours, but not for a few days.

ENROLMENTS
In Zone Enrolment - If you have a child starting school this year or in 2022 and haven’t already enrolled them please go to the School's website to complete the Online application. Please let your friends or family who live in zone and have children due to start school know to apply online.
Out of Zone Siblings - if you live outside the school zone and already have a child at Point View School, any brother or sister of that student who is turning 5 years old in 2022 needs to complete the online out of zone ballot application to go in the draw in October.
Please note that enrolment is not automatic for out of zone siblings, they MUST take part in the ballot process.
Road Patrol Help Still Needed
We urgently need help with the crossing on Kilkenny Drive on Tuesday mornings from 8:20am till 8:50am.
We have no parents help to supervise the crossing at the moment. If you can help please contact us in the office admin@pointview.school.nz. This is a very important role as it involves the safety of all our students.
