Family & Student Weekly News
December 4, 2018
Dear Brooklyn Collaborative Families,
Thank you to all of you who attended our Student-Led Conferences (SLCs) last Thursday and Friday. You came out in sizable numbers to support your child in taking responsibility for their own learning.
We greatly appreciated your ongoing partnership with us in educating your child. With the support of your child’s crew leader, you left the SLC with a plan of action of how to provide targeted support for your child’s academic success.
We encourage you to regularly have conversations with your child about their academic progress as captured in PupilPath. Take this time to talk and listen to them about the classes in which they are demonstrating mastery as well as the classes that they may be experiencing some difficulty. We also ask that you have your child attend Mastery Support on Tuesdays if they need additional academic support in any of their classes. All teachers will be available from 3:15 p.m. -4:00 p.m. to support.
Mark your calendars as we kick off December! BCS is excited by the opportunities and events that this first week of December has in store for you.
The PTA would love to have you join them this Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. for their PTA General Meeting. This is an opportunity for you share your ideas, expertise, and get involved in the school community.
All are invited this Thursday evening, 12/6, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. to the Passerine Project-- a concert of original songs written and composed by our 6th grade students with the help of Grammy award winner Shevy Smith to honor brave refugee poets. The lyrics are poems written by Afghan women refugees.
To wrap up the week, we hope you will join us this Friday, December 7th, for our monthly Family Breakfast Series from 8:15 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in room 411. This month's topic will focus on Mindfulness and Helping Your Child Manage Stress. We are delighted to have our school counselor Deb as our guest speaker/facilitator! RSVP to imani@bcs448.org.
As part of the BCS Pledge 4 Family Engagement Campaign, we hope to see you at least one or all of these events.
With deep gratitude and appreciation,
Scill, Amanda, Imani (BCS School Leaders)
Tracey (BCS Parent Coordinator)

11th Grade US History Launch Website on American Indian Decolonization
- Students in 11th grade US History launched their websites on American Indian decolonization. Stories of decolonization are not often told to the American public, and so this work is difficult but so important in telling a more accurate picture of American Indians as proud and active in their own fight for liberation.
- Examples of student websites are about mindfulness in healing historical trauma for Lakota people, casino gambling for the Oneida nation, Two-Spirit people of the Crow Nation, and lots of others.

We will let everyone know when our jam will be officially on sale in the next few weeks.
