MSIFN Candidates
Meet your 2019-2020 Candidates
Vice-Chair
Deane Spencer
I believe that MSIFN should serve to both guide best practice related to continuous improvement throughout the state, as well as serve as a driver to synthesize current needs and practices across the state around continuous improvement. One is looking across the state from the bigger picture of the state, the other is looking into the individual school lens and applying the state lens into each unique school/district. There are a multitude of lenses and systems related to best practice in relation to education in Michigan. We have a unique opportunity as leaders in this work to engage with and give voice to the thousands of educators in classrooms, buildings and districts who translate the legislation and structures into organic systems that reflect the stakeholders in their educational communities

MSIFN serves a critical role in supporting local schools and districts in providing positive outcomes and opportunities for all students and families. MSIFN helps bring the talents, expertise, and perspectives of school improvement facilitators from across the state working together to ascertain and promote best practices, sound processes, and strengthen systems to improve teaching and learning across the state. Our partnership with MDE, as well as other educational organizations, is essential to communicate and advance the MICIP process and other statewide initiatives transmitting policy into practice for local/regional stakeholders. MSIFN is a strong network that works consistently to build capacity for those supporting continuous improvement; positively influence decisions that impact students, teachers, and leaders: and improve the quality of services and supports for local schools and districts.

I would appreciate having the support of my colleagues for the position of Secretary.
MSIFN is one of the best parts of my school year – and I look forward to the networking, technical updates, and new learning that occur at our meetings. Our voices are critical to conversations going on at the State level about systems, platforms, and improvement. I value my colleagues input into the changing landscape of MICIP and MISchoolData redesign - where I constantly encourage the inclusion of MSIFN members in the conversation. I enjoy taking notes, creating opportunities for sharing in our online environment, and facilitating learning by moving to technology embedded practices.

As I consider the role of MSIFN, I believe that we have a great responsibility to advocate for our districts to the State to improve the Continuous Improvement Process. We want the process to be meaningful and impactful but not so overwhelming that it becomes a compliance driven process. In addition, this organization should support facilitators through opportunities to collaborate and share expertise which will grow every member to be a better facilitator of the CIP. As a member of MSIFN, I plan to bring my content expertise and knowledge to the group as we consider ways to improve the process and support our districts.

MSIFN plays a vital role in disseminating the MDE’s continuous improvement updates to our locals. The role of the improvement facilitator has never been more important, as we are leaders in developing, implementing, and sustaining the systems and structures necessary for continuous improvement and addressing the needs of the Whole Child. And we combine these with the flexibility and growth mindset to adjust to constant changes at the federal and state level, as well as attending to the specific needs of our local schools.

I believe that MSIFN is an active and vital conduit between local districts and MDE. During MSIFN meetings and with the work of the MSIFN subgroup known as” CSI”, one can see that MDE looks for feedback and assistance from this group to launch some of the projects that MDE is developing. Likewise, local district leaders and teachers ask school improvement facilitators for assistance and insight on the school improvement process and on MDE initiatives and requirements. School improvement facilitators who are active with MSIFN are able network with their peers, share strategies and practices on helping schools be more successful and gain personal development skills and knowledge during our meetings.

As a statewide organization, the role MSIFN is to build the competence and confidence of school improvement facilitators, both individually and collectively, in leading and facilitating the continuous improvement process to improve services to districts and outcomes for all students.
