OSSD Safe and Healthy Schools
12/05/2022
Dear OSSD Community,
Randolph Union High School reopped today and we are so grateful to have our students and staff back in the building. We are asking everyone to be flexible and dress in layers as the repairs are ongoing. Thank you to everyone in the community who made these repairs a priority so we could get our students back in the building.
This week, December 5 -9, is Computer Science week and OSSD students across the district are working on coding and programing challenges. Students in the elementary schools are working with STEM Teacher Jeff Green to learn how to operate robotics systems using LIttleBits Code Kits. High School students enrolled in the Innovation Center, Computer Science classes, and Robotics classes are using Lightbot and participating in various activities to celebrate Hour Of Code.
A subcommittee of the board met last week to begin discussing the creation of an OSSD Portrait of a Graduate. Vermont has a state Portrait of a Graduate. However, the state encourages every community to create their own based on the needs and vision of the community. We look forward to starting this work in January.
The Digital-Filmmaking & Media Arts program at Randolph Technical Career Center have been busy making videos to promote the RTCC programs and support positive school culture. Check out their Letters of Love video below and view all their content on their RTCCTV YouTube Channel.
Please see the introduction to our new Extended Learning Coordinator, Maddie Holdbrooks below. Maddie will be leading opportunities for afterschool programs and summer programs across the district.
We look forward to seeing many of you soon at the next Community Forum event on Wednesday, December 21.

Community Dinner Planned for January
A subcommittee of the school board met on Wednesday 11/30/2022 to discuss ownership linkage. Ownership linkage refers to ways the school board can connect with community members and tax payers. At this meeting, committee members agreed to launch a series of community events. They are planning to host a community dinner in January to engage with the community around the topic of the creation of a district Portrait of a Graduate (PoG). The PoG will be a community created aspirational document to guide our critical work of educating students. More information coming soon regarding the date and details of the first event which will be a community dinner in January.

Thank you to the Randolph Rotary Club
On Friday, Deb Schaner presented her marine biology trip slideshow to the Randolph Rotary Club. Deb shared her educational and life experiences she has had with students and the ocean. Her enthusiasm for the content and love for our students was most prevalent in her presentation. After the presentation the Randolph Rotary Club voted to financially support the trip with a $2000.00 donation and an additional $1,000 was provided through private donation. We are deeply grateful to the rotary for their generous support of educational initiatives in our community.
Human Rights Day - Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All
Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10 — the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This Saturday marks the 75th anniversary of this universally important document.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, politics, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. In the decades since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, human rights have become more recognized and more guaranteed across the globe. It has served as the foundation for an expanding system of human rights protection for vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and migrants.
However, the promise of the UDHR, of dignity and equality in rights, has been under a sustained assault in recent years. As the world faces challenges new and ongoing – pandemics, conflicts, exploding inequalities, racism, climate change – the values, and rights enshrined in the UDHR provide guideposts for our collective actions that do not leave anyone behind. Whenever and wherever humanity's values are abandoned, we all are at greater risk. The solutions to today’s greatest crises are rooted in human rights.
Beginning on December 10, 2022, the United Nations will engage in a year-long campaign to promote and recognize the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The United Nations 2022 theme is: Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All
