What Is Teacher Induction?

Induction is the process by which a teacher earns eligibility for recommendation to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for issue of a Clear Teaching Credential. A teacher must earn a Clear credential within five years of activating her/his Preliminary credential. The SUHSD currently provides access to a 24-month, CTC-approved Induction program at no cost to over 250 eligible teachers.

Induction Mentor Team for 2018-19

The Induction Mentor Team for 2018-19 will support approximately 140 Candidates next year. Mentors teach at nearly every site and represent all content areas. The Mentor Team was composed to address expected needs (content, site, grade level, existing relationships) of Candidates who will continue in our program next year.

Q3 Induction Mentor Workshop: January 22 & 23, 2018

Goals of this workshop included:


  1. Reflect on achievements and challenges for semester 2
  2. Build shared experience and understanding of Reciprocal Teaching
  3. Consider possibilities offered by CSTP/Continuum of Teaching Practice classroom observation guide for feedback
  4. Consider ways mentors can communicate with site administration on behalf of candidate growth
  5. Explore semester 2 applications of Sibme for Year Two Candidates

Q3 Induction Candidate Seminar: February 12 & 13, 2018

Goals of this workshop included:


  1. Reconceptualize “text”
  2. Define disciplinary literacy and consider equity dimensions
  3. Consider how reciprocal teaching generates evidence of desired learning outcomes
  4. Work with peers to develop classroom and PLC tools

  1. Reflect on individual coaching strengths and growth areas
  2. Review and consider problems of practice to drive Induction
  3. Identify and explore strategies for addressing problems of practice
  4. Preview Q4 Candidate Seminar and define mentor roles there
  5. Preview Inquiry #4, Final Inquiry and Sem 2 Round Table plans

Goals of this event included:


  1. Review annual SUHSD Induction program expectations
  2. Review and consider problems of practice to drive Induction
  3. Identify and explore strategies for addressing problems of practice
  4. Experience structured social interaction via jigsaw
  5. Draft goals for advancing equity in the SUHSD
  6. Preview Semester 2 Round Table and consider roles there

SUHSD Teacher Induction Collaborates with OLH Math on Lesson Study

With guidance from Induction Mentor Melanie Villanueva (CVH), Induction Mentors Melody Morris (OLH) and Aly Martinez (Induction) organized and facilitated Lesson Study for IMIII teachers. A similar model will be implemented by MVH Induction Candidate Rebecca McKee and MOH Induction Candidate Julia Anker.

HTM Induction Candidate Angel Prado Named "Desmos Fellow"

Congratulations to Angel Prado (HTM) for being selected as a Desmos Fellow. As a member of Cohort 3, Angel will fly out on an all-expenses paid trip to Desmos HQ in San Francisco this summer to get VIP access and training using this innovative and online graphing calculator/activity builder. He will bring Desmos tools and ideas learned at this fellowship meeting back to SUHSD and will continue to be an invaluable asset to our mathematics team. Congratulations to him and all induction candidates that applied. Want to apply for Cohort 4? Mark your calendars! Applications due March 1st 2019!

SYH Induction Mentor Maylén Rafuls Will Teach in Toulouse, France This Summer

This summer, Maylén will be a program leader with CIEE in Toulouse, France. Maylén will be facilitating high school students' immersion in French language and culture by engaging students in practicing their language skills outside of class via community conversations and leading students in cultural excursions to museums and other important sites. In addition, students will keep a reflective journal, which Maylén is responsible for assessing.
