Celebrating Black History Month
Jackie Robinson
Several people in major league baseball tried to end segregation in the sport. No one succeeded until Jackie Robinson agreed to a contract with the Brooklyn Dodger in 1945. During his career Jackie faced numerous obstacles with racial intolerance and would have bottles thrown at him during games. He would go on to play for the Dodger for 9 years with 137 home runs, 734 runs batted in and 197 stolen bases. Jackie played an essential role in the Dodgers beating the New York Yankees in their first World Series. Jackie Robinson was also the first African American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
"I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me...All I ask is that you respect me as a human being."
-Jackie Robinson
