Ideas About Formative and Summative

Formative assessments are not always done through paper and pencil. Teachers may also use whiteboards and markers to check understanding. Students will reply to 2-3 questions, students who does not get the concept may be pulled for further instructions during small groups. Teachers may also use the technique of "thumbs-up, thumbs down." Teacher also checks for comprehension - as the teacher ask, students will reply with the use of their thumbs to agree or disagree with the teacher (Newman, 2013). Another way to check for understanding is the use of exit slips, before transitioning to the next subject, teachers may hand out an exit slip which contains 2-3 questions to see if students have a clear understanding of what has been taught. The exit slips could also contain of "What have you learned today?" to check for students who did not get the lesson.

Summative Assessments is a collaboration of the lesson to check for over all understanding. Teachers may give a test at the end of the week to check for comprehensions for concepts or lesson taught during the week. Teachers may also give a summative test after completing a lesson targeting one common core standard to really see what the children had retained during the previous lesson. Another way of a summative assessment is a project where students can apply their ideas using the lessons taught.
