Interview with Hernando de Soto

Reporter, Joelle Hwang: Hello! How are you? It has been a long time since you have been on a expedition. I am very glad to interviewing you today.

Hernando de Soto: No problem! It is a honor to be interviewed after many years since my last expedition. I hope I can remember everything in fact without thinking things over.

Reporter, Joelle Hwang: Thank you. Now let's get started with the interview!

Q: Where and when were you born?

A: I was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain, and I am known to be born sometime in the 1500s. Although my birthdate is inaccurate, it is quite obvious that I was born in the early 1500s.

Q: What places did you explore?

A: I explored Peru, which I tried to conquer and did, Florida, Cuba, the Mississippi River, and more.

Q: Who paid for your trip to explore the golden cities?

A: King Charles V of Spain sent me to find the golden cities, which was a very difficult job for me. Even though it really wasn't the job I was looking for, I searched traveled many miles to complete the expedition to find the golden cities.

Q: In what years did you search for the golden cities?

A: I searched for what King Charles V sent me for. Unfortunately, King Charles V died in 1542, which was during the third year of my exploration.

Q: What were some accomplishments you made during your exploration?

A: I found the Mississippi River, and helped Francisco Pizzaro conquer or take over Peru. I was very rich after I overtook all the gold from the natives that lived in Peru.

Q: What were the purposes that led you into your expeditions?

A: One reason I was led to Florida, was to find the seven golden cities. I also went to Peru to help conquer the land there.

Q: What do you plan to do in the future?

A: What I plan to do is to continue my expedition in finding the golden cities some day. I hope there will be success!
