FRESHMAN WINS THIRD TEXAS HISTORY DAY TITLE
Dripping Springs High School freshman Grant Gillum captured his third-straight state title in the Texas History Day competition on Saturday, April 15, by winning the Senior Division Website category with his entry, “Power for the People: How LBJ Tamed the Frontiers of Texas Hill Country Electrification". Gillum also won a special award for his use of archival records from the LBJ Presidential Library.
In February, Gillum won the Cen-Tex History Day Contest to qualify for the state event. His website was based on the 2022-23 theme, “Frontiers in History: People, Places, and Ideas”. Gillum’s faculty sponsor is long-time National History Day teacher Kibbie Jensen.
The National History Day® contest engages more than 350,000 students to conduct historical research on a topic of their choice. Each year, a theme is chosen for broad application to world, national, or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past.
In addition to winning the last three state competitions, Gillum placed third at the national contest in 2021. The National History Day event will be held June 11-15 at the University of Maryland in College Park. This is the fourth-straight year a DSISD student has advanced to nationals.
A school-record eight Dripping Springs High School seniors have been named National Merit Finalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors are recognized with this prestigious honor.
DSHS students earning this recognition are Teresa Brod, Evelyn Chis, Michael Goertz, Bailey Inglish, Maxwell Ingram, Shaun Kurian, Nicholas Misko and Kinsey Silcox.
Of the 16,000 students who were named Semifinalists in September, approximately 15,000 were selected as Finalists after recording the highest scores on the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
Throughout the spring and summer, roughly half of the Finalists will be notified that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship® award.
DSHS STUDENTS ADVANCE TO STATE IN THEATRICAL DESIGN
Six Dripping Springs High School students have qualified for the UIL Theatrical Design state competition after submitting designs to a panel of judges related to this year’s theme of Dorothy Louise’s “Frankenstein”.
Advancing to the state competition in Set Design are Natasha Newton and Brooklyn Rice. Competing together in the Group Design category are Rianne Bernhard, Abigail Brown, Molly Gretzinger and Klaire Woods. Students are able to enter the competition as an individual in Set Design, Costume Design, Makeup Design and Marketing Design, or a group of four students can form to design all four categories.
After judge critiques, the state qualifiers make adjustments and resubmit their materials in late April. The UIL Theatrical Design state competition will be held May 2-3 at the Round Rock ISD Performing Arts Center where students will give oral presentations in front of a panel of judges. The work of all state medalists will be on display for the UIL One-Act Play competition later that week.
