Saying goodbye to our longest serving volunteer at our Bukit Merah Centre
Although our Bukit Merah Centre just opened its doors last year in November 2020, we are grateful to have had found ourselves a dedicated volunteer in Mr Shangjun Tang who committed 6 months of his precious time to us.
When Mr Tang commenced a break from his 10-year long career as a lawyer, he was determined to devote some time during this period to serve the community. As a parent of two young girls, he knows how crucial it is for children to receive love, support, nourishment, and education. CWW’s foci of serving and empowering disadvantaged children by, amongst others, providing hot meals, tuition, fresh groceries and supplies, and a safe space to ‘hang out’ after formal school hours, are aspects that he affirmed and hence wanted to lend his support to. That began his volunteering journey at our centre 3-4 times a week, becoming a regular and known figure to our children.
During his time with us, Mr Tang helped us to create a system for our library which our children could benefit from. He also spent many hours tutoring and guiding our students with their work.
It was such a blessing for us to have a dedicated fatherly figure for our students and we will definitely miss his presence in our centre! Thank you Mr Tang and we wish you all the best!
Spotting the stars in our little ones
Every child has an interest and a talent. We believe firmly that with a little support, we can give our young ones the opportunity to pursue a path that brings out the best in them. A few years ago, one of our 8-year-olds at Children's Wishing Well drew the picture below. She said, "This is a rich girl (pointing to the figure on the left) and this is just me."
We felt very saddened by what she said. But we saw that she drew stars in her eyes, and we also noticed her talent for art.
So we found a sponsor and registered her at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) to learn art. NAFA is a prestigious arts school that has even been featured in the Straits Times because of parents camping overnight to queue for a spot in their art classes. Despite the odds, we were able to give her the opportunity of learning at NAFA (thanks to our kind sponsor).
Fast forward to today, she has built up an impressive portfolio such as some of the work seen below. She has put in so much hard work, perseverance, sweat and tears along this journey and this is only the start of greater things to come.
We have helped many children embark on their own journeys, with the hope that they too will realise their greatest potential. So, will you join us in finding the hidden stars amongst our little ones?

A new lease of life with a new furniture at home
For many of us, purchasing new furniture when they run their course is the norm. Sometimes, it is not even the case of our furniture being spoilt, but rather the excitement of having the latest technologies, or the newest models. Hence, we may not realise the impact that a new piece of furniture or equipment can have on the lifestyle and daily living for some of the families under Children's Wishing Well.
A new bed means that a 9 year old does not need to sleep next to her parents, and has a little more room and autonomy when she rests at night.
A coffee table can double up as both a dining table & a study table for a 12 year old, providing him a conducive space to do his homework and study.
And last but not the least, a stove that lets a family cook once again to provide home-cooked meals for their children.
These are simple household items and furniture that you and I sometimes take for granted but our families and children were so happy to receive!
Thank you AIA for your continued support to granting our families wishes!
Crowdfunding Campaign - Groceries for Disadvantaged Families
During this challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our children and families continue to go through hard times due to the uncertain economy. Many of our beneficiaries recounted to us that their parents' income had been badly affected and that they feel really down. Some of them go to bed hungry, while others find it difficult to focus on their studies.
At Children's Wishing Well, we try to ease their financial burdens by providing them with some groceries that can help feed the family. No child or family should struggle with groceries and putting food on the table during a pandemic. Your donation can go a long way in helping them and making sure they are not left behind in times like these.
Should you wish to support us in aiding these families, please donate generously at: https://www.giving.sg/childrens-wishing-well/groceries_for_disadvantaged
No amount is too small so lets come together to support our families in need.
Your contribution counts!
Against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, adaptability in the face of adversity is key and we have tweaked the services we provide to respond to the most pressing needs of our families. It is of utmost importance that no child goes hungry and always has something nutritious to eat. Any amount you contribute, big or small, will go a long way in supporting them, be it funding a hot meal or a tuition lesson.
