W&M Equestrian: Girl Scout Day
Join us for a day of equine learning and one-on-one riding!
Sorry, this event is full!
Perfect for Girl Scouts of any skill or experience level!
The William & Mary Equestrian Club invites Girl Scouts to spend a day with the horses at Willow Pond Farm on Saturday, November 14. Throughout the day we'll be playing fun barn games and learning about animal care, all while interacting with our wonderful horses here on the property. Additionally, girls will have the opportunity to go horseback riding and learn basic skills such as grooming, tacking up, mounting/dismounting, and giving commands to the horses using their reigns and legs.
Our goal is to create a safe environment in which the Girl Scouts can gain confidence in interacting with these animals and to enjoy spending time with our William & Mary riders! For Brownies, the activities should satisfy the try-it badge. For Juniors, the day's events can contribute towards their Horseback Riding Badge, and all girls will earn a "Willow Pond Equestrian" badge.
The sessions are further described below, and are geared toward Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, and Seniors.
Includes a Willow Pond Equestrian patch!
Event Details
Both sessions will be further divided into groups to ensure Girl Scouts have the most valuable and individualized experience possible. The groups are described below, and you can choose the group you sign up for using the RSVP form linked below.
Session 1:
- Group A: All learning will be done on the ground. We'll do some horse care, basic grooming techniques, learn about the parts of a horse, learn about horse body language, and try leading a horse. This will be done with one-on-one supervision from club members, and our coach will be present for the entirety of the event. This group is a great choice for girls who may be nervous about getting on a horse right away! Cost: $20
- Group B: This group will learn much of the same material listed above, but Girl Scouts in this group will also participate in an adult-led ride at the walk. Cost: $30
- Group C: This group will also be learning much of the same material as groups A and B, but also going on an adult-led walk and trot. **Any juniors participating to earn their Horseback Riding badge will need to choose this option, as trotting is a requirement of the badge. Cost: $40
Sign up recommendations for Daises, Brownies and Juniors: We suggest that Daisies choose between groups A and B, depending on their comfort levels. Brownies are welcome to choose from any of the three groups. We recommend juniors choose between groups B and C (however, if any are too nervous riding but would still like to spend some time learning about horses, they are welcome to choose group A). Prices for each group vary and are listed above.
Session 2:
Session 2 will be split up by age group. Cadettes and Seniors will be led separately through the same activities, which will include the following:
Basic terminology and body language as in the first session, in addition to more advanced grooming, like pulling manes and braiding tails for shows. The girls will tack up a horse to get it ready to ride. After learning the proper aids to give commands to the horse, the girls ride at the walk, sitting trot, and posting trot with one-on-one help from club members. We will also spend Again, our coach will be present for the entirety of the event.
