Week of March 7th - March 11th

Letter from Principal Nelson

Proud Residents of Smallville USA-

It seems like each time I write to you, I wish you well on your 3-day weekend, and I have no problem with that. This weekend should be beautiful, and our students and selves need the time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate. Spring Fever is almost here, and anything we can do to combat the wiggles our kids seem always to have, the better.

Know that when your student returns next week, we will be taking our last round of SCAs (Short Cycle Assessments) for all STAAR-tested subjects. Unlike the STAAR, this is live data that we can use to drive current instruction. Meaning we can identify the gaps and then work tirelessly in our PLCs to fill them before the finale in May. All your student needs to do to relax and rely on what they learned in their classes. All we ask is that they do their best and produce an accurate picture of what they have learned this year so we can better prepare them for STAAR. If your student is in Band, performing for UIL next week, make sure they know they are still required to take these exams when back on campus.

Masks:

Beginning next week, masks will no longer be required when on campus. Students, staff, and visitors can still wear them, and we will have plenty of them available, but is it not a requirement. We know that our staff and students will respect the choices of others, and we will make sure that all are treated fairly and feel accepted, regardless of whether or not masks are on. We want families to know we respect their decision regarding whether or not their student is to wear a mask, but we will not enforce their wishes upon the student. Meaning if a student on campus wishes not to wear a mask, we cannot force them to, even if the family prefers their student does wear one. As for our staff and interactions with students, know that we are professionals and are here to teach, not judge, and will treat all students fairly regardless of their mask choice.

Here is a link to the updated Mask Policy from AISD. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns about it. AISD Masks

New Attendance Clerk and Procedures

Hi everyone, I am Amanda Elliott the new attendance specialist at Small. I am excited to be working with everyone and look forward to getting to know you. We have updated the Small Website Attendance page and can submit notes online. This will allow for less paper and will help make Small a Greener Campus. On the Attendance Page you can now enter an absence and request an early pickup. Remember when picking up students early to give us at least an hour notice. This will ensure you are not waiting for your student for up to 15 minutes to arrive when you get here. It helps saves you time as well and will make sure you get to where you need to go as well. You can still handwrite an excuse note as well if needed. Don't forget that school starts right at 8:20. If you arrive after that your student will be marked Tardy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions by email at amanda.elliott@austinisd.org or directly at 512-841-6702. Have a wonderful Holiday Season.
