Library Media Center Newsletter
Where the learning never stops!
Third period marking update
This newsletter will be sent home to parents once a marking period to keep everyone updated with all of the exciting activities taking place in the Library Media Center. Mr. Bilmes, the new library media specialist at OHS, is happy to be part of the OHS community. He came here after spending the past 15 years at the middle school level, and is enjoying working with the talented and dedicated staff at OHS and getting to know the students. In addition to being the library media specialist, Mr. Bilmes is the webmaster for the OHS website. One of Mr. Bilmes's first priorities upon coming to OHS was to get the students more excited about reading. Mr. Bilmes has also been working with students in their classes, helping them with research projects and with evaluating websites and introducing students and their teachers to exciting online presentation tools like infographics. Mr. Bilmes has a sophomore advisory group which he has enjoyed getting to know, too.
Live at the LMC!
Live at the LMC! is a monthly event which features students performing for their peers. The first one, in February, featured amazing music, vocal and poetry performances by students who put on three rounds of performances viewed by nearly 150 students.
Going Green in the LMC
Instead of signing in on paper forms when they come to the LMC for study hall, students now sign in on a computer. Having the electronic sign-in is saving hundreds of sheets of paper over the course of the year.
Have a heart!
To get students in the mood for Valentine's Day, they could check out a book about love which had a heart on its cover and the words, "Fall in love with a good book for Valentine's Day." Once they checked the book out, they could remove the heart and see the cover.
Playaways are here
We now have our first batch of Playaways for students to check out. These are individual MP3 players with an audiobook downloaded on them. All students need to listen to them are a set of earbuds. One student liked his Playaway so much that he listened to the entire book in one day! Some of the titles we have on Playaway are "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green, "Code Name Verity" by Elizabeth Wein and "Legend" by Marie Lu.
