School Counseling Connection
Freshmen September 2021
Welcome Class of 2025
Freshman year is a time of transition. High school presents students with a wide range of opportunities and challenges. The size of the school is larger; the coursework is more demanding; numerous activities are available. Most students are excited and a little apprehensive when they begin high school. They wonder about fitting in, if they will like their new teachers and school, if they will succeed.
Students are also expected to be more independent and begin to plan for their future. The courses they take and the grades they earn, as well as the activities they join, will have an impact on their options after graduation. Please keep the lines of communication open and encourage your student to see his/her school counselor if they have questions/concerns.
School Counselors, Ms. Buehne and Mr. Finnegan, will be meeting with all freshmen over the next few weeks in small groups through their Civics classes. As the year progresses, groups will be held to discuss study skills, organization skills, preparing for exams, understanding test scores, and various other topics.
Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s counselor with any question/concern. In addition, please encourage your student to visit their counselor in room 112 if they ever need assistance.
Standardized Testing:
All freshmen will take the PSAT 8/9 on Wednesday, October 13th during the school day. Students do not need to register for this test; La Salle Academy has ordered exams for all grade 9 students. The test is the first in the College Board’s Readiness Pathway and measures the skills students need to be on track for success in college and careers. Details regarding the test can be found on CollegeBoard.
Also, although this test is practice, teachers will use a student’s scores, in conjunction with classroom performance, when making course recommendations for sophomore year.
You can find the PSAT 8/9 student guide below or on your counselor's bulletin board on Blackbaud.
