HES 2016 Spelling Bee

During last night’s Spelling Bee, “23” third, fourth, and fifth graders performed their job so earnestly that we went “20” rounds before declaring our 2016 Spelling Bee Champion, Phoebe Vannier and our runner up, Maceo Pizana! In a close contest, Aditri Baditela placed third.

In the hubbub before the bee started, many worrywarts disguised their fear and waited as paragons of words that the normal person cannot even begin to pronounce. The bee ran smoothly and the judges did not have to converse in polemic debate, as the contestants were able to enunciate all words with accuracy and spelled them with efficiency. As judges, we were so enamored by the gargantuan repertoire of these students, as they spelled words like bossa nova, vituperative, arpeggio, interlocutor, ecclesiastical, auferiferous, insouciance, and de rigeur. Who has even heard of some of these words? I’ll tell you who…our Hamilton Lions! We would like to give accolades to each and every one of the students below! They should all be proud!

Horizons/Gifted and Talented Testing Update

If you referred your child during the Horizons Referral Period last semester to be tested for the Horizons program, testing will begin on Monday, January 11, and conclude on February 12. Please be looking in your child’s backpacks today, January 8, for an envelope that specifies your child’s specific testing dates.

Credit by Exam

Students in grades K-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit-by-exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will only have one opportunity to test for each grade level considered.

To apply to take the test to skip kindergarten, a student must be 5 by September 1, and registered in a CFISD school. To apply to take the test to skip grade 1, a student must be 6 by September 1, and enrolled in a CFISD school.

Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No retests will be given.

If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact the school counselor, Michelle Erickson, at 281-320-7055 or
