Please Stop Laughing at Me

by: Jodee Blanco created by: Kari Schack

Please Stop Laughing at Me is autobiography about a girl named Jodee Blanco who gets bullied. She started getting bullied in fourth grade for being friends with a deaf girl and the bullying continued. She switched schools many times because the bullying got too bad, like it says in the book, "[My mom] wanted me as far away from that academy as possible, so she suggested that I go to the local public school," pg. 92. She gets bullied for every little thing she does, like how she looks or acts. This book encourages everyone to stand up and stop bullying.

Character Analysis

Jodee Blanco is the main character and narrator. She is gets bullied for being a "tattle tale" and for her breast deformity. She started getting bullied in fourth grade and she moves from many schools up till she graduates because the bullying is so bad. The bullying is so bad her parents think something is wrong with her so they take her to a psychiatrist.

In this book the conflict is character vs. society because Jodee gets bullied by many people in every school she goes too. She started getting bullied by kids in fourth grade like it says in the book "I told her to go to another school because we all hate her here," Eddie retorted. Freak, freak, nobody likes the freak," they repeated over and over, a mantra of exclusion,"pg. 39. Also, when Jodee thought she made friends with the kids in her neighborhood they turned on her like it says on pg. 127 "Wait a minute," I cried. "You're not supposed to throw it like that, you're suppose to throw under---" Before I could finish the sentence, Sam hurled the softball right at me. It bashed my leg just above the knee. I winced. Everyone laughed except Jason". She never really resolved the problem of bullying but she made it better by telling responsible adults, ignoring the bullies, standing up for herself, etc.

What people can take away from this book is some important lessons, like to stand up for yourself and ignore the bully as much as possible. Also, that most times the bully thinks they are just joking around and not actually hurting you or your feelings. So help them understand that they are harming you and you want it to stop. Finally, make sure you pick the right group of friends because Jodee chose the wrong friends some times and got in trouble and got in a place where she was uncomfortable doing something.

Textual Evidence

One of my favorite quotes in the book was "I've been blessed. Despite getting knocked down so many times, God keeps putting people in my corner at just the right time who give me the courage and strength to come out for one more round." pg. 212. I like this quote because everyone has someone there for them whether they know it or not like what Jodee said in this quote.

Book Review

I would rate this book a five out of five because it was very suspenseful and it had a good point behind it. It was a true story of how a girl dealt with bullies and how she lived through the pain and humiliation. Also, I read that it helped many people stop bullying and I think that is amazing.
